A lovely food experience, but service could improve: Restaurant Nea Folia (23. November 2024)

I had already read about the Nea Folia in preparation of my trip a few weeks ago, but since one could not book online, I didn’t book a table at the time. However, when I was wondering around the city that day, I kind of accidentally passed it, and was then happy that I found something for lunch. The place was empty when I walked in by like 1pm and by that I somehow clearly disturbed their routine as the waiter, and I suppose the owner, wasn’t all too happy to have a guest. I had wanted a place near their oven, but somehow that was not possible, which was a bit disappointing. In any case, I was able to place my order, which started with “grilled cheese” (EUR 6.50) and while it didn’t look all too exciting, it was actually tasty.

Then I went for the “marinated anchovies” (EUR 6.00), which were served in a lovely little tower of anchovies – and they were overall quite delicious. The additional ingredients with which the anchovies were served added nicely to the anchovies.

Last but not least, I went for the “octopus with barley and anice” (EUR 14.00) and got something completely different than expected. I had somehow expected a proper octopus on a plate with some sides, but it turned out to be a soup with risi and octopus pieces. And I do admit, it was quite tasty, but definitely not what I had expected. On top of that, it was a rather large portion.

Last but not least, a small dessert was brought to my table and that marked a good ending to the lunch – even though, the crumbles were a bit too bread crumbly for me.

The place has its very own appeal, and frankly, if it was warmer, this would be a quite perfect place, but given the insulation is rather poor, it was a bit cold in there.

All in all, the Nea Folia offers good dishes for absolutely fair prices in a lovely atmosphere (if it was a bit warmer) and the service is good too. Frankly, not too friendly at first, but throughout lunch, the waiter became friendlier and kinder. So, all in all, worth a try.
