8. August 2012: Restaurant Roses

Having high expectations is not always a good idea – as they were only partially fulfilled. The starter – “Tuscan calamari” (grilled baby calamari with gambas, olives, and cherrry tomatoes in a spicy chili sauce and roasted paysan’s bread; EUR 14.90) were definitely delicious. The calamari were not chewy at all, the combination of olives and cherry tomatoes with the spiciness of the sauce was great.

Then the disappointment hit – and it hit hard. The Argentinian rumpsteak “La Morocha” (grilled with homemade herb butter and steakhouse fries; EUR 19.90) was absolutely nothing special. Yeah, the meat was somehow tender but it just had absolutely no taste – it was tasteless in its literal meaning!

If steakhouse fries are supposed to be some kind of special French fries I did not get the message – they were just regular French fries and regular bad – stroppy, not salted, disgusting.

Then again the rollercoaster ride continued and we were on the way up again – the French and Italian cheese selection (served with olives, fig mustard, Sicilian paysan’s bread and salted butter; EUR 10.80) was absolutely great. The selection of cheese was good, they were all tasty, went very well with the fig mustard and last but not least were just a round dish. The only disappointment was that I had not clue what I was really eating as the waiter did not bother to explain what he had served

The wine we had, a bottle of the “Ursprung”, Markus Schneider, 2009 (EUR 24.80) was good and you could drink quite some of it. The prices are very adequate (besides for the main course) – also for the drinks: a bottle of Apollinaris Selection (0,75L) accounts for EUR 6.00.

Overall, I cannot say if I can recommend the place or not – starter and desert were dream-like, the main course was absolutely nothing! The place is not outstanding when it comes to the furniture or the service but quite okay. Overall, I think one should give it a try and choose another main course – definitely do not go for the “La Morocha”!
