20. December 2012: Restaurant Zunfthaus zur Waag

Although the start was a bit awkward and surprising, it was a nice one. I have never seen sausage as a starting element of a lunch but it was surprising and new. The olive dip served with the bread was delicious and you had to control yourself in order not to eat everything before the actual meal.

I decided to go for the “lunch menu” (CHF 46.00) which started with a “Chestnut soup” which was very refined, smooth, but still had the appropriate finesse.

The main course was “Irish beef filet in a pepper sauce, artichoke-spinach risotto, and winter vegetables”. The beef was tender, the artichoke-spinach risotto was outstanding and the vegetables were okay. A real disappointment was the sauce though. It did not really tasty like anything – especially not like pepper.

I was actually already stuffed with the meal but they announced the desert to be so special that I figured I should give it a try. The “Chocolate Mousse by Marcel Chardon” (CHF 15.50) is apparently something really special and outstanding as it is especially fluffy. Honestly, I was disappointed. I mean, the mousse was good and aromatic, no question. But it was not fluffy really but rather heavy. So, if that was the “very special” recipe, you failed, dear Zunfthaus zur Waag.

All in all, the food was good – no question about that. Actually even better than average. Especially if you look at the prices (in Zurich), then it was definitely great. Even a double espresso (CHF 6.80) is affordable. The deal becomes even sweeter if you book your table via appetini.ch as you get a 30% discount on your whole bill (inkl. drinks).

The service is very friendly and does a good job, the place itself is atmospheric, warm, welcoming, inviting and still very stylish. Overall, I can definitely recommend to have lunch at the Restaurant Zunfthaus zur Waag – only their very special desert was kind of a disappointment.
