29. December 2012: Restaurant Urban

| January 2, 2013 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Urban was recommended by the Hotel I was staying at – and it was a good recommendation. It is located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego and as usually I checked in and found a nice surprise – if you check in on foursquare.com you get a starter for free!

So, I had the “Beef Sliders” (grilled beef patties, cheese, caramelized onion) which usually accounts for USD 10.00. The two small hamburgers were definitely tasty, the buns were perfectly roasted, the angus beef patties were tasty, the cheese okay – good small burgers. The only problem is the relation of bread and meat but definitely very tasty!

As a main, I had the “Baked Salmon” (pestro crust, grilled asparagus, artichoke cream sauce, crispy potatoes; USD 24.00) and it was astonishingly tasty. The fish was fresh and moist, the crust was full of flavour, the grilled asparagus was good too, and the crispy potatoes on top of everything provided the dish with the necessary texture.

Bread served before starters was fine too. It was actual bread – not this bad American fluffy bread but real bread with texture! Great experience for a change!

The food was definitely good – beating my US food experience so far by far. The only downer was the Ginger Ale (USD 2.95) as it had the taste of Ginger Ale but with a very bad aftertaste of chlorine. I mean, I am well aware that the water in the States is not drinkable without chlorine but if even the Ginger Ale has the taste of chlorine, then I must say, this is a big no go! Probably because I ordered without any ice so they thinned it out with water – and especially then, an absolute no go!

The place is nicely furnished and the service from Danko, apparently somehow kind of the owner, was good. The service of the other waiter was, well, limitedly optimal. All in all, I can recommend the Restaurant Urban – good food, fair prices, nice place, generally good service. Just the soft drinks issue was definitely a downer!
