A nice place for lunch close to Venice airport: Restaurant All’Ombra del Gabbiano (11. February 2024)

It wasn’t entirely easy to find a good restaurant close to Venice airport, which was open on a Sunday, but eventually, I stumbled over All’Ombra del Gabbiano, which is located on the mainland, but still in the city of Venice. Once you’re seated, you get a bit of ‘smoked salmon’ as an amuse bouche, which is good to get yourself started – palate-wise.

I then went for the “taglierini di pasta fresca all’uovo ‘Cacio & Pepe’ con bottarga di muggine” (EUR 17.00) and while I was positively surprised how it tasted, I had missed the bottarga element, when reading through (had focussed on the cacio & pepe), so, I was a bit surprised at first. However, the combination of the cacio & pepe with the bottarga actually went well, although, it was a rather intense flavour combination.

The “guancia di vitellone brasata al Montepulciano d’Abruzzo con purè di patate e porro croccante” (EUR 28.00) was definitely interesting. The veal cheeks were tender and fell apart easily when using your fork. Plus, it was full of flavour and the crispy leek on top added a bit of  texture and sweetness to the dish.

The place is simple, but comes across as comfortable – and the staff is friendly, and makes sure you’re served swiftly so you can make it to your plane on time. All in all, the All’Ombra del Gabbiano is a good option if you’re in the vicinity of the airport.
