A close to perfect à la carte breakfast menu: Restaurant Sushisamba @ W Edinburgh (27. April 2024)
I was a bit surprised to learn that the W does not have a breakfast buffet, especially, since I really enjoy the W breakfast buffets usually, but they offer an à la carte selection of dishes (usually, you get one hot dish per person). However, it seems like I was lucky and was allowed two per day. The first day, I went for the “Classic Eggs Benedict (toasted muffin, treacle cured smoked ham, poached eggs, Hollandaise sauce)”, which were cooked to perfection. The egg yolk was perfectly liquid, and it went great with the delicious sauce Hollandaise!

The “Scottish Breakfast (Tattie Scone, Link sausage, grilled back bacon, tomato, beans, haggis, flat mushroom, stornoway black pudding and eggs)” is definitely not something for those who enjoy a light breakfast to start their day. It’s damn tasty, but it’s incredibly meat-heavy, and the haggis is something you need to enjoy having it for breakfast.

The second day, I went for the “avocado & eggs (grilled sourdough, smashed avocado, crumbled feta, chili flakes)”, which felt much healthier, and it was actually quite tasty. The eggs were cooked to perfection, but frankly, something I will never understand, is the need to ‘add sprouts’ to the dish.

Last but not least, I went for the “creamy polenta (polenta, grilled asparagus, harissa roasted mushrooms, vegan feta)”, which worked a charm as a dish. The mushrooms cooked in harissa were delicious with the polenta, and the asparagus was quite okay too. However, the polenta was prepared too watery (for my personal gusto), which I didn’t quite enjoy too much.

The place is rather lovely, and I can definitely see how the Sushisamba works great as a Sushisamba when there is no breakfast served. Other than that, the staff is superbly friendly and makes sure you have everything you need and want.

The only downside of the concept of à la carte breakfast is the fact that you have to wait for a bit until they have your food prepared, which isn’t entirely optimal if you have something like a walking tour booked and somehow haven’t accounted for a 10-15′ waiting time for your breakfast. Other than that, if you stay at the W, which is lovely in Edinburgh, then it’s definitely worth having breakfast here.
