The place I will always remember for its deep-fried Mars bar: Restaurant Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips (27. April 2024)
We hadn’t booked anything for lunch, so we gave a recommendation a try, and I must say, it was definitely not something very light to eat, but it was rather enjoyable. We went for the “battered haddock served with twice cooked chips & tartare sauce” (GBP 15.95), which was great. I mean, the fish crisps were delicious, and the fries were actually quite enjoyable too.

The “baked haddock served with twice cooked chips & tartare sauce” (GBP 15.95) was somehow not really what we had expected as somehow we were thinking it would also be served in some kind of crisp – but well, the fish itself was quite okay with a lot of lemon and the sauce tartare. By itself, it was lacking a bit of flavour, though.

What I absolutely liked was the “steak pie (tender pieces of braised stew, slow cooked in gravy and encased in pastry, served with garden peas and twice cooked chips)” (GBP 14.95). It doesn’t look too appealing, admittedly, but I must say that the steak pie was delicious – and the gravy in which it was cooked and served was absolutely mouthwatering. Only the peas were a bit of a disappointed as they were lacking a bit of seasoning.

We had talked about one of the typical Scottish dishes, the “deep-fried Mars bar (Mars chocolate bar battered and deep-fried, served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce)” (GBP 7.50). Well, it is definitely an experience to eat this. A proper calorie bomb, after which you feel like you’re going to explode from calories. Personally, it is a once in a lifetime kind of thing as it is so heavy, you really don’t want to eat a second one of these. The vanilla ice cream with which it was served was nice, and it was a nice balance to the relatively hot, heavy, and greasy fried Mars bar.

Bertie’s proper fish & chips is definitely a place you can try if you’re into fish and chips, and given the number of people and the turnover of the tables, it seems to be rather successful with what it is doing for quite a while already.

Our waiter was superbly friendly, attentive, and rather swift, so, despite the relatively simple food, the Bertie’s is a place I recommend you to try if you enjoy fish & chips.
