When the food becomes better with every dish you try: Restaurant Um Plateau (4. September 2024)

The Um Plateau is quite high rated when you look it up online, and frankly, I get why – and I don’t get why. So, the place was super crowded and relatively loud, plus we got assigned a tiny table. Luckily, the waitress was superbly friendly and moved us to a larger table after about 30 minutes. We went for a few different starters, starting with the “croquettes artisanales de crevettes grises” (EUR 12.00), which were rather bland. Frankly, if there would have been a dip or anything, this might have been enjoyable, but like this it was rather … meh.

The “tempura de fleur de courgette, sauce gribiche” (EUR 12.00) was okay. Although the batter was light, it felt a bit oily in terms of flavours and, hence, wasn’t too enjoyable.

After we had placed the order, they showed up a few minutes later saying, they do not have the sardines any more. I then said, it’s fine, and I don’t want to have them replaced by another can of sardines. So, funny enough, suddenly, they showed up and were like, well, turns out, we found them anyway. Nice, but also somehow a bit surprising and confusing. In any case, the “sardines de l’Atelier de Cuisine Bertrand, pêche 2023, au poivre noir fumé de Tellicherry” (EUR 18.00) were actually good. In terms of intensity of flavour, they were rather smooth since they didn’t have a dominant other component like tomato or curry.

While the waitress was superbly friendly, attentive and nice, the kitchen seemed a little slow, tbh. However, the “stracciatella (paprika, cumin, huile d’olive à l’ail, grenade, persil, pain focaccia)” (EUR 14.00) turned out to be quite tasty. I liked the combination with the pomegranate seeds since it added to the dish, making it much lighter. The focaccia was fine, but a bit too dense for my personal gusto.

The “carpaccio de boeuf (lamelle et crème de champignons de Paris, tartare de tomatoes de couleurs, câpres, salade roquette)” (EUR 18.00) was actually better than I had expected. Somehow, I was expecting something not too great, but it turned out that the meat was actually tasty, the thickness of the cut was nice – you had something to bite and at the same time, you would have the lightness of the carpaccio, so, a good starter.

Finally, it was time for the main course – the “entrecôte de boeuf, Grain-fed (Argentina) (300gr)” (EUR 39.00) served with “Sauce Béarnaise and Pommes Paille” turned out to be quite delicious. Frankly, I hadn’t expected that, but the quality of the meat was great, the flavour profile created happiness, and the Sauce Béarnaise was ultimately also exquisite.

The waitress offered us a schnaps on the house in the end – just like that, without us asking or anything, which was absolutely lovely as a gesture. So, in terms of why going here, I would say that they have a nice location (but too crowded and a bit noisy) if you sit outside. On top of that they are having friendly and competent staff, and some of the food is actually great. The first few starters weren’t really, but the last starters and the main course were great.
