Where you get a tasting menu for two as they are not equipped to just serve one: Restaurant Grain Street (8. September 2024)

The Grain Street is definitely a place worth visiting when you’re in Malta – the place is simple, but offers a nice “Tasting Sharing Menu” (EUR 65.00 per person) with a good wine pairing called “Sommelier Experience” (EUR 35.00). Now, one thing ahead, if you go alone, you might end up having way too much food, since it’s a tasting sharing menu, the goal is not to have this alone, but with someone, so you will end up with way too much food. The evening started with “bread and spread”, which was actually quite nice. Had I known how much food was going to be served, though, I wouldn’t have eaten that much bread.

To get a starter, you get a “lasagnette fritti with mozzarella di bufala, Parmesan emulsion” and “crispy pig ears, mustard & tarragon mayo” and both of it is actually absolutely delicious, so, highly recommendable to order that off the regular menu.

Then, they went for the “aquerello risotto with tomato fondue, stracciatella & bottarga”, which was absolutely lovely. The rice was perfect in terms of texture and flavour, and superbly rich, but light. It also came with their apparent signature dish, the “lasagne ‘nera’ with calamari, squid ink, Nduja”, and frankly, I can see how this could be great in terms of flavour combination and texture, but given the size of the lasagne, it was definitely too dry. So, even if it was good in terms of taste, the texture was absolutely off.

Then it was time for the main course. And yes, this was one main course, which was served all together. It was the “grilled rib-eye of grain-fed black angus beef, gherkin ketchup, Stroganoff sauce”, the “local fresh fish, Vichyssoise garni, black olives, brown butter aged vinegar dressing”, “pan fried potato & Parmesan terrine, charred onions”, “BBQ local cabagge with spiced brown butter” and “black risotto”. The risotto was outstanding – they really know their risottos. The meat was great too, and the fish was okay. So, the food was – frankly – good, but for one person it is just way too much.

When I asked the waitress if this was usually for two people, she admitted to that, which is surprising. Not that she admitted it, of course, but that they do not adjust the menu to one person, as it wouldn’t be too hard to do. The staff is exquisite – friendly, attentive, and making sure you have what you need at all times. So, all in all, if you’re not going for the tasting menu alone, the choice is great.
