A good vegetarian dinner experience with varying service quality: Restaurant Cookies Cream (24. May 2025)
The Cookies Cream was on my to-do list for many years – and somehow I never ended up going here. But now it was the right time – but beware, it’s a vegetarian place, so, don’t expect the flavory tasty meats, expect the flavory, tasty vegetables! There is one menu, which can be taken as a five- to seven-course menu. I decided to go for the “Electric Bloom (5-course menu)” (EUR 115.00), which started with “bread with whipped butter”, which was quite okay, but personally, I found the bread a little bit too dry.
The first course was “kohlrabi, pea, radish”, which was looking a little bit boring, but actually turned out to be quite delicious, since the dish had a nice combination of different flavor and texture components, which worked together very well. I thought it might pair very well with raw prawns, so, definitely a good start into the dinner.
The next bite was “bell pepper, jalapeño, capers”, which you needed to crush with your spoon, so the paprika powder would go everywhere. And despite the fact that the mass at the bottom was quite dense and actually not easy to eat, it turned out to be quite a nice combination between different flavors and textures – and frankly, the part you cannot see well in the picture is the bell pepper ice cream in the middle, and it turned out to be quite amazing. Not only from a flavor perspective, but also because you would have different textures and different temperatures in one bite. So, quite nice.
Now, the next course was my absolute highlight this evening – the “celeriac, macadamia, yuzu” was a combination of flavors and textures, which made your taste buds dance, and it was a truly lovely dish I easily could have eaten three to four of these – and I don’t think this would have reduced my enjoyment. It was a truly exquisite combination of flavors. What I also enjoyed about that yellow little thing on the side (which was a smear of lemon shell) was the very slight bitterness towards the end of the bite.
Then, unfortunately, it started going down a little in terms of taste experience. The “puntarelle, morel, monk’s beard” had a great tortelloni, which had the perfect bite as it was cooked al dente. Other than that, the dish was – in my opinion – rather dull, and really didn’t fit into the rest of the dinner so far.
Given I am not a big fan of sweets, I swapped the dessert for an “Onsen egg yolk (seaweed caviar, sour cream)”, which is one of their signature dishes. Now, what didn’t work too well was the fact that I had ordered that instead of the dessert, which I realized at the moment when they had put the same cutlery on my side of the table as for the one enjoying dessert. So, I reminded them – and they played it perfectly because they said that ‘of course they had planned it that way’, but then, obviously, the dish came with the small spoon you need for the egg to take the content out. But, in any case, the Onsen egg was actually delicious and absolutely something I would try again when I’m in the Cookies Cream – maybe even go for their list of signature dishes, since the one I had tried was great.
Last but not least, it was time for some jelly, which was a nice ending. The place is lovely, it’s open, it’s loud, it’s nice, and professional. But only so to some degree. The ‘Berlin chic’ style service has its flaws – one waitress figured it’s okay to sit down right next to you on the bench to explain the dish. I mean, maybe that’s your thing, but I find that intrusive. The other one forgot about the special order, see above, and last but not least, the wine and water glasses were not refilled on a regular basis – and they did not place the decanter or the water bottle in reach, which made it – in parts – a little annoying.
That being said, the overall experience in the Cookies Cream is a positive one – they had a few very exquisite dishes in a nice atmosphere, and generally speaking for an okay price. For Berlin, and for a vegetarian menu, I find EUR 115.00 rather much, but ignoring that for a second, it was a positive surprise in terms of food quality. When you want to go here, make sure to book your table well in advance but also make sure to be there early as the entrance to the place is really not easy to find.
