Southern France restaurant with the equivalent food quality: Restaurant Aubergine (31. August 2025)
When you enter the Aubergine, you’re immediately taken to the South of France – just from the way the restaurant is set up. I decided to give an interesting drink a try, and went for the “Beyond the Mediterranean (mezcal, agua de tomate herbal, mix dulce-amarga con fino, crujiente de jamón)” (EUR 17.00), which was a great drink all in all, but my favorite part of that drink was definitely the dried ham on top of it. That was so savory that you would want more and more of it, but – unfortunately – they wouldn’t offer that.

As a starter I decided to go for the “white pizzeta with grapes, stracciatella, smoked mozzarella, red onion, oregano, nuts, rocket sprouts and chilli oil” (EUR 16.00), which turned out to be better than expected. It’s literally like small pizza slices and is, therefore, rather rich in terms of flavor and taste. However, adding grapes and walnuts onto these tiny pizzas really adds to the flavor experience.

The “artichoke flower with tomato and roasted garlic sauce with Tallegio cheese” (EUR 21.00) was actually much better than I had expected too, but it was lacking the ‘little something’.

The “beef skirt steak burger with Ibizan paprika cheese, Iberian pork belly, cucumber and turmeric relish with homemade fries” (EUR 23.00) on the other hand was the absolute disappointment. The meat was okay, but frankly, everything else was somewhat disappointing. Not sure why that was, but the whole burger patty wasn’t really great, neither was there any promised pork belly on that dish, and the fries really looked more like thicker crisps. So, that was relatively disappointing.

At least, the “kale salad” (EUR 20.00) was quite tasty and refreshing, so, something I would consider a good dish here.

Last but not least, the “Atzaró farm roasted pumpkin salad with feta cheese cream, arugula and Greek yogurt, cherry tomatoes, black sesame and mustard dressing, balsamic vinegar and basil oil” (EUR 22.00) turned out to be quite delicious – but it was a bit too much in the end for me to end it all.

Last but not least, I was really hoping for a ‘home-made ice cream’ pot, but what I got instead was something rather pre-packed in the form of a “salted caramel ice cream” (EUR 9.00), which was – admittedly – good, but I felt like this wasn’t entirely what you would want from ice cream in a restaurant.

The service staff is largely doing a good job, but not consistently. Sometimes it takes quite a while for them to come to your table again – while joking jovially with the next table – which is a bit of a pity (of course not for the ‘next table’).

The place is really gorgeous, but very different from a place like Juntos House, but really gorgeous when the sun goes down – you do feel like in the middle of France during summer.

To sum it up, the place is gorgeous and for that reason you should visit the Aubergine. However, when it comes to the food, the quality isn’t quite where I’d like it to be. Sure, the food is decent, but it could be so much better. Additionally, they have also a very weird setup of their menu starting with “Starters”, then to “Mains”, and then to “Dessert”. You might wonder now why that’s odd? Because after the desserts, it’s time for the second main course grill menu. I mean, sure, that all works, but it’s rather confusing. So, I’d definitely come here again in the afternoon for a drink to enjoy the place, but less the food, tbh.
