They have definitely stepped up their cocktail and food game: Restaurant La Catedral Cócteles y Antojitos (25. November 2025)

It’s a bit more than two years ago and back then I found the food selection relatively disappointing, but luckily, that has changed. We decided to share a few dishes and went for the “pimientos de padrón (Pimientos de Padrón “Toreados” tossed with salsa negra with miso and black garlic)” (CHF 17.00), which were among the best pimientos de padrón I’ve ever had. The combination with miso and black garlic is truly an enjoyable one. Secondly, the “quesadilla trufada (fresh ground corn masa, stuffed with queso Oaxaca, fried crispy tartufata, served with tomatillo-salsa cruda)” (CHF 18.00) was in thus far nice since it had a nice intensity with regards to the cheese (and the cheese filling was generous). The truffle taste wasn’t bad, but it was also not something I need to repeat.

The “croquetas de birria (crispy lamb birria croquettes with herb cream)” (5 pieces, CHF 25.00) were great. The sauce was a little boring and I believe a spicy dip would have served the purpose here much better, but that being said, the birria croquetas were delicious.

The “secreto Ibérico (charcoal grilled secreto Ibérico, maldon salt, jalapeño chimichurri, on MASAMOR corn tortilla)” (CHF 25.00) was delicious. Sure, the meat was a bit chewy to eat, but it is pork, so, if you cook it well, it will be a bit chewy. However, the jalapeño chimichurri was great in combination with the meat. On top of that, the tortillas at the bottom soaked up that sauce really good, and made it even more delicious.

The quesadillas are served the same way, but – obviously – the filling is different. The “quesadilla maravilla (fresh ground corn masa, stuffed with queso Oaxaca, fried crispy, served with tomatillo salsa cruda)” (CHF 16.00) has only queso de Oaxaca inside, and I must say, it’s better than the truffled version of it.

Last but not least, we ordered “tostadas truchas (crunchy tostadas, smoked trout salad, fresh tomato, salsa macha, lime)” (CHF 28.50), which were surprisingly delicious. The tostada worked well with the trout – and the refreshing tomato slices on top.

So, the food has definitely improved – in terms of selection, and as far as I remember, also in terms of quality. But they had also stepped up their cocktail game. I started with the “Locura con Amor (Altos Tequila, Clamato, Gomme, Lime Juice, Michelada Mix, Apricot Liqueur (all clarified)” (CHF 18.00), which was nice and refreshing.

Next in line was the “El Conquistador (Altos Tequila, Sour Apple, Elderflower, Aperitivo, Citrus, Distilled Laurel Soda)” (CHF 19.00), which was fine, but not as great as the previous cocktail.

And last but not least, I went for the “Arrasa con Todo (Altos Tequila, Watermelon, Vetiver-Pepper Cordial, Citrus, Cumin Liqueur)” (CHF 19.00), which was a lovely cocktail ending for the evening.

With the invoice, we also got a few negroni shots, which was a nice gesture from the house – and they were not too intense, but actually enjoyable, which was nice.

The place has a very traditional touch to it, but given the high ceilings, it doesn’t feel as crowded as it would otherwise.

The staff is friendly and attentive, and takes good care of you. It might have helped that we were seated right at the exit of the kitchen, so, it was also hard to miss us. However, all in all, the La Catedral has improved compared to my last visit, and now I’d say, it’s a nice place to visit.
