A close to perfect experience – with mistakes on the bill: Restaurant 893 Ryōtei (6. December 2025)
It’s a good 2.5 years ago since I’ve last been to the 893 Ryotei, and I was definitely looking forward to it again! This time, luckily, I got seated at the counter right in front of the head chef – which was fascinating observing him, how he would prepare (almost) every single dish in a never ending stakkato of activity. Frankly, it was stunning. And I absolutely loved it!
We went for the “horenso & truffle (raw spinach, black truffle, su-miso)” (EUR 21.00) to get started, which was absolutely lovely. I hadn’t expected that, but it was truly a delicious meal.

Next in line, I went for the “Sashimi Sake (5 pieces)” (EUR 20.00), which then turned out to be 8 pieces instead. However, the fish, which was clearly not salmon, was actually absolutely exquisite, buttery, light, and intense, I wasn’t complaining.

Next in line was the “tuna tartare & foie gras (tuna, foie gras, tobiko, soy)” (EUR 25.00), which was a bit too heavy – for my personal gusto – on the fish roe side, but other than that, it turned out to be quite a perfect combination of textures, flavors, and temperatures.

The sushi were definitely among the most expensive that evening, but man, were they good! The “O Toro (tuna belly)” (EUR 20.00) was definitely something you wouldn’t get enough if you had the chance to enjoy it over and over again. The “uni” (EUR 20.00) was also great, but definitely a dish where you need to enjoy something salty to savor it.

Then it was time for the “sashimi taquitos moriawase (tuna (tuna, tortilla, jalapeño, daikon cress, truffle mayonnaise, spicy mayonnaise) + butterfish (butterfish, tortilla, jalapeño, truffle, rosemary, olive oil, truffe mayonnaise, sea salt) + salmon (salmon, tortilla, avocado, jalapeño, daikon cress, truffle mayonnaise, spicy mayonnaise))” (EUR 36.00), which – I must admit – I found a little disappointing. I mean, sure, the taco was somewhat funny and it somehow was fine too, but compared to the other dishes, it was just lacking a bit in awesomeness.

The “kamo duck & sarisho pepper” (EUR 28.00) on the other hand was absolutely outstanding. The duck was cooked to perfection, and it went so damn well with the pepper sauce that you almost didn’t feel like you wanted to eat anything else.

With something like “tako (grilled octopus, tomato, avocado, onion, sesame soy dressing)” (EUR 20.00), I always feel it’s a bit of a gamble if it will be enjoyable or not. But this one turned out to be delicious. The octopus was cooked to perfection – and the refreshing combination of tomatoes, avocado, chili, vinaigrette, radishes, and onions really made for a great dish.

Even the “green salad” (EUR 5.00) turned out to be quite lovely!

The only two things, which were a bit disappointing that evening was the “garlic rice” (EUR 6.00), because it was on the bill, but we never got it. And the fact that they had charged the table 2 alcoholic drinks, which we had never ordered. Sure, mistakes can happen, and I should have checked the bill when I got it, but I still find that, for a place of that quality, it’s somewhat a no go.
I’ve reached out to them, and I’m curious to hear how they’ll offer to solve this issue.
This was the view into the kitchen we were able to enjoy throughout the whole evening – which was superbly lovely! If you enjoy cooking or watching people cook, you should definitely try to get the space right in front of the head chef!

You might wonder to what extent this place feels like something you’d want to visit. And frankly, if you look at it from the outside, I probably wouldn’t. But, once you’re there, and you’ve tried their food, you’ll know why booking weeks in advance is something you should absolutely do!

So, to sum it up – the 893 Ryotei is definitely something you should try, if you have the chance to (and obviously, if you love seafood). Make sure to book weeks if not months in advance – it’s definitely worth doing so! Frankly, despite the mistake with the bill, which overcharged me by EUR 35.00, I still find the whole experience quite amazing! So, if you have a chance to give this place a try, do so!
