Another amazing local food experience up in the mountains: Restaurant Proavlio Tavern (28. February 2026)

Given I had been exploring the island by car basically the whole day, I wasn’t quite sure when I would be back to the hotel, so, it was another hotel recommendation and I ended up in the Proavlio Tavern. The place was absolutely busy, and I was lucky to score a table for a Saturday evening. That being said, the owner welcomed me in a very friendly manner and made sure that I felt absolutely welcome. I decided to try a few traditional dishes and went for the “tyrokafteri (spicy cheese)” (EUR 3.00) with bread. Frankly, that is something to get used to, not necessarily the easiest bite. The intensity is rather high, so, you need to enjoy strong flavors to enjoy it.

However, the “home-made mousakas” (EUR 15.50) was absolutely excellent. It was so smooth, so full of flavor that you would want to eat it all. However, the portion is quite massive, and there was no chance I would be able to eat it all by myself.

Given I was interested in trying local stuff, I went for the “grilled village sausage” (EUR 3.50), which was absolutely great. I think it’s the same type of sausage I’ve enjoyed the evening before, but I must admit, this one was a hint stronger in flavor, so, frankly, all in all super nice, as I enjoy strong flavors.

I also decided to go for the “halloumi rolls with sausage” (EUR 8.00), which were – in all fairness – somewhat not really exciting. I mean, sure, the halloumi was good, and the sausage was decent, but the cominbation of all of this in dough was somewhat boring.

I also went for the “traditional Greek lamb kleftiko” (EUR 16.00), which was actually quite great. The meat was a tiny bit too dry for my personal gusto, but since the potato had a bit of humidity, it was a good combination of meat and potato, and was truly enjoyable.

The place is nice and very atmospheric inside, so, definitely a place I would book again if I’m to return to Cyprus.

All in all, the Proavlio Tavern is definitely a place I can recommend you. Make sure to book in advance, especially, on weekends!
