Not only great in general, but with an interesting tasting menu: Restaurant BaoBae (21. April 2026)

Although I have been here a few times, I hadn’t tried the “The BaoBae Tasting Journey (our chef-curated tasting menu with 9 courses – a playful progression through modern Chinese flavors)” (CHF 88.00) so far, so, I was quite curious what I would have to expect. On top of that, I found the price quite decent for what I had expected.

The journey started with three small bites, which were great to get your palate started.

Next in line was a bao bun with prawns. Frankly, I didn’t expect this to taste great, but it actually did. The flavor profile of the prawns was rather enjoyable and went well with the slightly crunchy bun – which was a little greasy to touch.

Next in line was a mixture of different ingredients, which I quite enjoyed overall.

Then it was time for a bit of fish with a slightly spicy sauce – nothing wrong with that either.

Then, they served the “mama Shu’s Wagyu Rice (wagyu lardo, soy, MSG)”, which was actually quite tasty too. Frankly, the meat wasn’t the best thing I’ve eaten, but the wagyu rice was rather enjoyable.

And it came with some more meat with sprouts. Sure, that was fine too, but the meat quality was actually not as great as with other dishes I had tried.

Then, they served their “peanut ‘ramen’ (peanut sauce, roasted onions, lime, fresh noods, Spanish jamón)”, which I enjoyed quite a bit, especially with the spicy chili sauce applied to it. I mean, it’s a noodle dish (I love noodles!) and you add spice to it (I love spicy!), so, it’s rather simple in its execution, but it’s also enjoyable and somewhat comfort food.

Then, it was already time for the dessert, which was a mixture of coconut icecream with a few more fruity ingredients. And, personally, I must admit that I quite enjoyed the dessert (although, I’m usually not the biggest fan of sweets).

The place is rather simple in terms of interior design, but overall enjoyable. I would highly recommend for you to get a table at the back since the tables at the front have one side of their seating on a porch, which makes you sit “higher” compared to your company. That being said, all in all, the food was good, the service is friendly and attentive, and the price performance ratio is fine too, so, I enjoyed the BaoBae Tasting Menu, but I do admit, that I perfer the single dishes you can select for yourself. Booking in advance highly (!) recommended!
