Traditional Greek food where you wouldn’t expect it: Restaurant Botanical Garden of Crete (2. May 2026)

| June 25, 2026 | 0 Comments

There is a Botanical Garden of Crete, which is a bit remote, so, it takes you quite a while to get there. That being said, it’s worth the drive as the garden is quite lovely already in the beginning of May, so, I can only imagine how it is once everything is in full bloom. Once you’re done with the 2 hours walk to take a look at all flowers, feed the donkeys, and admire the peacocks, then it’s time to have something small to eat in their restaurant. Given they offered things I didn’t know, which were local, I figured we should give these a try, and we went for the “dakos (bread from the wood oven, sliced tomato, mizithra, and oregano)” (EUR 6.90), which was nice as the bread is made by them in their wood oven and as simple as it is, it’s tasty.

What I enjoyed even more were their “Minoan hand-made pie (pie with wild fennel from the garden)” (EUR 6.90), which are rather simple, but – frankly – superbly tasty, so, definitely something I would try any day again.

Once you’re ready to leave, you’re offered a “herbal tea on the house”, which is really herbal and overall enjoyable.

The view onto their gardens is nice and the staff is friendly and attentive – only when it came to paying the bill, they somehow became super slow, which is a bit of a pity since all was great until that very moment, but still, I can recommend you a quick pit-stop after the extensive walk thru their gardens.
