The first day they were open – and they’re not quite there yet: Restaurant Mr. E @ Istoria Beach, a Member of Design Hotels, Santorini (15. May 2026)
In their defense, they mentioned that this was the first day of the season they had opened, but frankly, they are not quite there yet. Upon asking for a specific wine, they said, the wine hadn’t been delivered, so, I asked for another one, which also hadn’t been delivered. Well, yeah, not really a great start – or maybe mention it upfront. In any case, we went for the “bread (handmade sourdough bread and flatbread, Greek olive oil, Santorini tomato paste)” (EUR 5.00), which was actually very good – especially the Santorini tomato paste. Definitely something, I will serve as a spread going forward.

Then, it was time for the “Aegean shrimp carpaccio (shrimp, lime, cucumber, olives, herbs, ramson capers)” (EUR 27.00), which was overall good, but the shrimp wasn’t cut as thinly as you would expect it from a carpaccio. So, good in taste, but lacking a bit in finesse when it comes to the preparation.

Then, we decided to have the “Greek meze sharing (mini cheese pie, tomato jam; Dakos barley rusk, tomato, feta; fried calamari, tarama aioli; grilled octopus, Santorini fava; beef croquette, tomato relish, smoked aubergine)” (EUR 36.00), which was somewhat disappointing. How? Well, first of all, there was only one beef croquette for a platter for two, which is already by itself a bit weird. That being said, the rest was just somehow very average – not really ‘bad’, but definitely fair from ‘good’.

As a main, I went for the “sea bass (fish of the day) (grilled fresh fish, olive oil, lemon, seasonal greens)” (EUR 40.00), which was – to be honest – great. However, the way it was served is definitely something I would not recommend to any restaurant. I mean, look at the fish and the way it’s head is split in two. Sure, not that I personally care much, but I don’t find it too appealing looking at the fish like this. As mentioned, though, it was delicious.

The place is okay, but tries to be fancier than it really is – and on top of that, the staff is friendly and attentive, but the head waitress wasn’t really on top of her game. She was too jovial for the fact that things didn’t quite work out.

Besides that, the hotel is located right next to the beach and is separated by a street, which makes the whole place rather noisy. So, personally, I wouldn’t really recommend you to visit the Mr. E. It looked and sounded promising, but was rather disappointing.
