An excellent last stop after the hike from Thira to Oia: Restaurant Ammoudi Fish Tavern (16. May 2026)

| July 15, 2026 | 0 Comments

We didn’t really plan to have lunch here, but given we were hungry after a beautiful scenic hike from Thira to Oia, the Ammoudi Fish Tavern felt like the perfect place to finish the hike and eat something. We started with a “bread basket (smoked marinate olives, roasted tomato paste from Santorini)” (EUR 3.50), which came with the famous and superbly delicious tomato paste.

To my surprise, the “fava santorinis (confit tomato, smoked white onion, capers)” (EUR 9.50) turned out to be superbly delicious too. I have tried fava in the past, and never found it that appealing, that being said, it really turned out to be superbly tasty.

The “Ammoudi salad (Romano lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, carrot, cucumber, olives, capers, spring onion, rocket salad, aged barrel vinegar)” (EUR 18.00) was decent, but nothing special, so, it didn’t quite play in the same league as the other dishes before.

The “mussels ‘Ahnista’ (red chilli, fennel, herbs, lemon, white wine)” (EUR 21.00) were great in taste, but it felt wrong to pay EUR 21.00 for 13 mussels. Like, usually, you get a put of I don’t know how many clams, and not just 13. So, that felt a bit like a rip-off.

While part of me enjoyed the octopus, the other part didn’t as the “octopus carpaccio (capers, rocket, radish, shallot, pepper-lemon dressing)” (EUR 23.00) wasn’t really a carpaccio but felt much more like slices of octopus kebab. Not saying that was necessarily bad, but it was definitely something rather unexpected.

Finally, the idea was to get a dessert, which is simple and doesn’t take long. And that was – in terms of duration for preparation – the wrong choice. It was very much the right choice when it comes to the taste of it. The “Greek style donuts – Loukoumades (ice cream, Ammoudi sauce, garnishes)” (EUR 16.00) are prepared right in front of your eyes with the garnishes of your choice. In our case, honey and pistachio.

The “artist” was more than happy to pose with the successful result of his preparation …

… and would serve it on your plate. Frankly, it is a bit of a sin with the deep-fried dough balls, which are rather fatty, and the mastika ice cream, the honey, and the pistachio on top. But, damn, it is tasty! So, if you have the chance to try these, then you definitely should.

All in all, the Ammoudi Fish Tavern is nice as it is located in the harbor and, hence, right by the sea. The staff is friendly, but they are trying too hard to help you. They even snatch you the water bottle out of your fingers when you’re trying to fill your glass – a behavior I don’t find very nice. That being said, the food is decent and so is the overall experience. So, nothing to complain, nothing much to highlight though either.
