An incredible find with excellent dishes where you wouldn’t expect it: Restaurant VILAS วิลาศ (27. June 2026)

I hadn’t booked anything for the first evening and was, hence, trying to find a place close to the hotel and I found the Vilas, which was located perfectly in a 5-mintues walking distance. The Vilas is located in an area of restaurants and food stalls, but on the lower levels – so, not a place you would accidentally walk by. That being said, they offer exquisite dishes starting with three small bites of the “blue swimming crab relish with bitter melon cracker” (590 THB), which was absolutely outstanding.

Next in line was the “Isen carpaccio with smoked quail egg and caviar” (690 THB), which was interesting because the quail egg looked a lot like an olive, but tasted – obviously – very differently. Hence, actually a delicious combination of flavors.

The “white asparagus salad with shrimps” (580 THB) was great because it had the texture of papaya salad as well as the spice level,  but it was somewhat more refreshing – and the shrimps were superbly tasty. So, another great meal.

I didn’t really know what to expect from the “roasted butternut squash and pickled egg yolk” (290 THB), but I found it something worth trying as the egg yolk in part of the butternut squash really added to the dish.

Surprisingly enough, the “grilled cabbage with fish sauce” (150 THB) turned out to be more than enjoyable as well. Sure, a rather simple dish, no question, but also a very enjoyable one – due to its simplicity.

The “Vilas pickles” (150 THB) were served a bit too late for my personal gusto as they were only served in the middle of the dinner and I would have rather seen them as a starter, but they were still delicious.

Finally, the “grilled fermented short rib” (1’250 THB) as a main was absolutely great. Especially in combination with the pickled small red onions and pickled garlic gloves, it was a great combination of flavors and textures. So, not necessarily an easy dish to digest, but definitely a delicious one.

What I liked about the Vilas when being seated was the decoration or rather the way things were set at the table. The napkin was lovely and overall it just somehow provided a positive vibe, so, definiteyl something I enjoyed quite a bit.

What I found even better was the fact that you would be able – at least from the table we had – to watch the kitchen prepare the dishes – not a given, and definitely something enjoyable for a foodie like me.

But also the interior was absolutely nice. The decoration was lovely and that was reinforced by the professional and attentive staff. I had asked if they could leave the bottle of water on the table to which they responded that they couldn’t, which was – frankly – surprising. However, despite the fact that the water consumption was exceptionally high that evening, they managed to be attentive enough to always have the water glass refilled, which was surprising and impressive.

Overall, I can absolutely recommend the Vilas – a lovely place with great staff, absoultely amazing dishes and, all in all, for a fair price. So, if you’re in the area close to Lumphini Park, then I would definitely recommend you to book the Vilas and enjoy an evening here (however, bring your sweater, the AC is quite strong here).
