23. May 2013: Restaurant Freudenhaus
Recommended by a local we were not disappointed of the “joy house”. The bread with some non-identifiable dip was a nice start to get something to your stomach to calm it down. The waiter was very attentive and incredibly friendly which surprised me (as this matches not at all with my so-far Hamburg experience).
As a starter I had “North Sea crab passionately peeled by blonde virgins served on scrambled egg and wholegrain bread” (EUR 11.00). The crabs were a simple but tasty dish.
As a main I had “pan fried veal schintzel “Kalle” with roasted potatoes and salad” (300gr, EUR 21.00). The schnitzel was absolutely tasty – not as thin as a Viennese schnitzel but tasty. Also, it was too big! 300 grams are quite a portion and I must admit I felt challenged finishing it.
What was in my opinion even more astonishing was the fact that quite a large salad was served with it – I mean when you already serve 300 grams of schnitzel why would you also serve a big salad? Still, the salad was fine too!
When I heard the name of the place, I expected quite a shabby place – but I must say it is not the case. The place is a bit plushy and interestingly decorated (with paintings which are quite obscene) but comfortable somehow. The prices are fair for what you get – overall definitely a nice place.
