1. June 2013: Mercado de San Miguel
As mentioned before, the Mercade de San Miguel is located right next to the Calle Mayor (where you can also find the Gelateria Amorino) and it is worth a visit! After having collected a few fish “tapas” from the “La Casa del Bacalao” (Sardina Ahumado, Ajoarriero, Pulpo, Bacalo and Atún, each EUR 1.00) as well as “Burrata on toast with olive pate” (EUR 3.50) from another place, completed with Sangría (EUR 2.00 per glass) and found a place outside, it was great!
Well, okay, to be more precise, the food was not that mind-blowing as I expected it to be! The fish “tapas” were good, no question, but somehow just good and nothing more. The Sangría was real tasty at least and the burratas was very good too (just too much – I got a bit annoyed of it towards the end of the portion).
What is truly great about this place is the factual element of it being a market – it is crowded at all times of the day and you get to see how they freshly cut the Jamón Iberico!
It is of course filled with tourists but it is also full of locals who actually eat there and enjoy a couple of glasses of wine or Sangría with the food they found at various places.
If you are into food, you have to go there and try a couple of things. Not necessarily from the “La Casa de Bacalao” as it was only limitedly great but there are quite a few others which looked great, like the Jamón Iberico place or there was a place where they sell freshly fried fish, sweets, and many many more!
