24. June 2013: Restaurant Mama Kim

| July 17, 2013 | 0 Comments

It is about 2 years ago since I have been to a Korean restaurant – my experience back then was already quite nice and I must say it was great again! Based on a recommendation of my company that evening I went for the “Ssam Menu” (EUR 25.00; chopped beef in special marinade, fried with vegetables, make your own korean traditional “wrap”, served with rice and a small starter). The concept is pretty similar to Mexican tortillas but the “tortillas” are replaced with “salad leaves” and the stuffing of course is totally different.

But first we got a small “amuse bouche” from the kitchen – “vegetables wrapped in dow served with wasabi sauce”. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the wasabi sauce was very wasabi-ish (spicy).

The soup which was also part of the menu which was served thereafter was simple but good – small pieces of chicken as well as some kind of “dim sums” was part of the soup, simple but rich.

For the main course we got quite some things: sidedishes like eggplants, tofu, Thai basil, sprouts, cucumbers, spinach and some other things I cannot quite recall now. Plus two kinds of rice were served of course!

But a “Ssam Menu” is nothing without the most important ingredient to make sure that you can actually build these Korean wraps – the salad leaves. While the one you see in the back was a regular salad leave, the one in front was very aromatic and tasty (although I was not able to quite figure what kind of salad it was).

The beef (you have a choice between pork, beef and chicken) is definitely not of outstanding quality but given you use the Ssam sauce, some rice and the beef and wrap it all in a salad leave, it is still quite tasty!

The place is family-run and while the waitress is already very friendly, the best thing is that “Mama Kim” actually comes to your table and asks if everything was okay which I consider a great move. The place is furnished very modern, lovely and nice – just great! The walls are full of pictures with “Mama Kim” as a motive – just nice!

And besides that, also the prices for beverages are fair (water, 0,75L, EUR 5.90). Overall, I can absolutely and totally recommend you to go to the Restaurant Mama Kim if you like Korean food or want to try it. The lightness of the “salad wraps” is just great! Absolutely worth going!
