6. April 2010: Restaurant Opus

| April 7, 2010 | 0 Comments

The restaurant Opus is situated right next to the river Reuss in Lucerne and is in walking distance from the city center as well as from the main station of Lucerne. In summer, the restaurant profits from its location next to the river where you can sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine in the sun or something alike. On the other hand, it really looks cozy once you’ve entered the place. It’s actually two-folded: On one side you can find the restaurant itself which has kind of a wooden interior design and on the other side you can find the wine bar/cellar with stone walls and lots of different wines located in it.

The occasion for us to go to Opus was an event which is offered by the Remimag (the company of which the Opus is part of) in some of their restaurants on a monthly basis: The Wine Palaver (it takes place every first Tuesday in the month and is on a different wine region every time – it’s recommendable to reserve a table at least 3 months in advance).

As a aperitivo we’ve had a glass of white wine from “Sauvignon Blanc ‘Classique’ 2006, Skoff” (the “topic” of the evening was “Austria”). It was soon accompanied by an amuse bouche. It was tasty – some kind of tomato thingy and was really starting to set off your appetite.

After the amuse bouche we’ve been served two other white wines to try: “Riesling Stoaraun 2008, Weingut Ernst Frischauf” and “Grüner Veltliner Der Ott 2007, Bernhard Ott”. Together with the wines we’ve got a salad of lamb’s lettuce together with jerky on pumpkin seed oil. The salad was good, especially the jerky provided with it was giving a special taste – but personally, the pumpkin seed oil isn’t my favourite at all.

Looking at the white wines, I must say that the “Riesling Stoaraun 2008, Weingut Ernst Frischauf” was my favourite one – without anything to eat accompanying it, as well as with the salad.

After the salad, we changed to the red wines which we degustated blindly. It was the following four: “Blauer Zweigelt Classic 2007, Josef Pöckl”, “St. Laurent Zantho 2007, Umathum/Peck”, “Cuvée Leithaberg 2003, Weingut Nehrer”, “Cuvée Oida Schwoaza 2006, Weingut Netzl”. Together with the red wines we’ve had the main course which was a “Wiener Schnitzel” which was optically somehow disappointing as it has been announced as a Wiener Schnitzel but if you’ve ever had a real Wiener Schnitzel the “Wiener Schnitzel” we got isn’t really persuasive (see picture below). Still, it must be said once you’ve overcome the disappointment about its size, the taste compansates you for that (at least to a certain degree). The potato salad on the other hand wasn’t really my kind of food as it had definitely too much mustard in it. From the red wines, my personal favourite was “Blauer Zweigelt Classic 2007, Josef Pöckl”.

For desert, we’ve been (how surprising!) served a desert wine: “Eiswein Kracher 2005, Weingut Kracher” and of course something typically Austrian: a Sachertorte! The desert itself was very chocolaty but extremly delightful in taste. The Eiswein was quite good too, but definitely too sweet for my taste.

Finally, the evening was rounded up with a double espresso and a quince schnaps (which was not really good in my opinion).

The service was good during the whole evening and especially the sommelier did a great job during the whole evening – being informative, somewhat entertaining without taking too much space/time and getting annoying!

The price performance ratio for the event was – in my opinion outstanding (even though I think the main dish shouldn’t be announced as a Wiener Schnitzel as it is none): CHF 65.00 per person for the whole evening, including three courses, 8 different wines, water, coffee and schnaps – nothing to complain about here!
