9. November 2013: Restaurant Herrlich @ Hotel Steigenberger Herrenhof

Once more I was positively surprised by booking a restaurant via Delinski – I have never heard of the Restaurant Herrlich before but I must say that it was a good decision to go there. As a first amuse bouche from the kitchen “shrimp with vegetables” was served which was a light and nice start into the evening. Unfortunately, the waitress failed to tell us what she served to us.

The next amuse bouche was actually really tasty – the cherry tomatoes were coated with a gluey cover tasting intensively of lemon which had a honey-like consistency. Definitely triggering my taste buds.

As a starter I got the “pickled dry aged beef with duck liver, avocado, corn and beetroot” (EUR 16.00, respectively EUR 11.20) which was quite a small portion but definitely very aromatic. The dry aged beef had an intense beef taste and the duck liver on top of it provided it with an even more intense creamy liver taste.

As a main course I had “saddle of venison in a cabbage coat, topinambur, chestnut and red onions” (EUR 28.00, respectively EUR 19.60) was mind blowingly tasty. The venison was beautifully red, tender and smooth and had a very pleasant taste of game. The cabbage coat provided it with a nice additional taste and the topinambur purrée was just causing fireworks of taste in my mouth.

As there was just the saddle of venison on the menu I had asked for a small salad with it (EUR 3.50, respectively EUR 2.45) and on one hand I thought it was a bit rude to charge something for it and on the other hand it was a very regular salad (which, in the end, was what I had asked for).

For dessert I went for the “large selection of different cheeses” (EUR 18.00, respectively EUR 12.60) and I must say it definitely was a large selection and a nice selection too – if only the waiter would have told me which cheeses he had served.

Overall, I must say the dishes are definitely of exquisit quality. I mean, none of them was so incredibly new and sending shivers down my spine but they were of very high quality ingredients and perfectly prepared. Personally, I do not get why one would ask for a cover charge (EUR 3.50, respectively EUR 2.45) if you are a well-known five star hotel but I guess that’s the way they make money …

The place itself is absolutely great – it is very spacious and you have enough privacy. The large mirror hanging from the wall which allows you, facing the mirror, to see who is coming and going is spectacular. Absolutely lovely. Despite all this the place is somehow missing this little special atmospheric feelin which makes you a 100% comfortable there.

The prices for the dishes are heavy for Vienna but given where the restaurant is and the quality of the food that is actually okay. If you manage to book a table via Delinski the prices are actually very reasonable. The prices for the drinks are reasonable too (even without Delinski) – a double espresso accounts for EUR 4.50, respectively EUR 3.15, a bottle of water Römerquelle, prickelnd for EUR 8.00, respectively EUR 5.60, a glass of Grüner Veltliner for EUR 5.50, respectively EUR 3.85 and a glass of Chianti, 2010, Antinori for EUR 9.50, respectively EUR 6.65.

The service is on a very good level – the waiter is friendly, jovially joking, does a great job. If only he had managed to tell us what we were served and which cheeses I had on my plate so I was able to give him the full five stars.

Overall, I can definitely recommend you to visit the Restaurant Herrlich @ Hotel Steigenberger Herrenhof in central Vienna – the place is nice, the service is very good, the dishes are of great taste and the prices are generally speaking fair (especially if you book via Delinski).
