10. November 2013: Unkai Sushi Bar @ Grand Hotel

I have walked by the Unkai Sushi Bar (on the ground floor) for approximately one year almost every second day and I still never managed to go in and try the sushi. Finally, I managed and I was not disappointed. I went for the “Special Sushi Set” (EUR 25.00) which included 3 kinds of sashimi, 4 kinds of nigiri-sushi and 4 kinds of maki-sushi as well as a miso soup. The miso soup was plain good.

Now the special sushi set held its promise – it was a great selection of different sushi. The tuna and salmon sashimi was of good quality, the nigiri sushi was fine and the maki sushi was a good selection too. I mean, the sushi was not mind boggeling like when you have sushi at the DOTS in the first district but it is of good quality and, frankly, what is great is that you get to watch the sushi master how he prepares the sushi right in front of you.

The waitress is very friendly, helpful and does a good job – the place itself is not that appealing as it is in the corner of the Grand Hotel and has a space of approximately 25 to 30 square meters but it is the ideal place to sit down and have a quick sushi for lunch. The prices are fair – given you are at the Grand Hotel. When it comes to beverages though, I must say that I was a bit surprised to be charged EUR 8.20 for 0,5L Calpis but I must say it was also the best Calpis I have had so far.

Overall, the Unkai Sushi Bar on the ground floor in the Grand Hotel is a place worth visiting. You have to be patient and must enjoy to watch the sushi master prepare the sushi – then you definitely should try this place. One side note with regards to the top floor restaurant Unkai – I have heard that it is not as good (but I will visit it and try it another day).
