27. April 2014: Restaurant Weinstube Alter Torkel

| April 30, 2014 | 0 Comments

To start off the dinner with a nice little something a nice selection of brawn in aspic jelly (CHF 16.00) was served with a vegetable vinegraitte which was rich and aromatic – a great start to dinner. The rose wine which was served with it, a Schiller (CHF 54.00) was fine but not outstanding.

The next course that night was an “exotic asparagus coco soup” (CHF 9.80) which was very smooth at first because the taste of asparagus was very subtle and a nice combination with the coco. While being rather pleasant at first, the chili which was added to the soup became quite rapidly too strong so you were not able to taste the smooth combination of asparagus and coco after a few minutes.

The main dish, a “lamb gigot steak with asparagus chive risotto and wild garlic chili butter” (CHF 41.80) left a good impression. The meat was soft, taste-intense and did not taste like lamb. The risotto was perfectly cooked and the wild garlic and chili butter was a great match to the meat.

The wine selection at the Restaurant Weinstube Alter Torkel is vast and they strongly focus on regional products – sometimes having funny names (see below). The “Gian Battista” (CHF 90.00; Pinot Noir) was a good and sound wine but not entirely to my liking as the pinot grape is just too blunt in my personal opinion.

The service is dedicated, friendly and generally attentive but sometimes you have to be a bit patient – still in the ranges of acceptable though. The prices are fair for what you get when it comes to the dishes but also with regards to the beverages (double espresso, CHF 6.50; 7,7DL Valser mineral water, CHF 10.50). While the place is beautiful inside it also looks quite cozy from the outside.

Summarizing the experience at the Restaurant Weinstube Alter Torkel, I must admit, like last time, it was a good experience: great food, good service, very nice atmosphere, and fair price performance ratio.
