30. April 2014: Restaurant Grandis

| May 4, 2014 | 0 Comments

A truly outstanding experience is what you get once you are dining at this restaurant – the restaurant Grandis is more of an enoteca with an additional restaurant which serves traditional food – and that was also the first course of the night, a very traditional one: “raclette with potatoes” (CHF 12.00) which was a tasty and rich raclette and a good basis for the experiences to come.

As a starter I had the “venison carpaccio refined with aged parmesan, olive oil and sea salt” (CHF 25.00) which was definitely very smooth and flavourful at the same time – light and fine.

What is interesting besides the vast selection of wines offered here is also that you get to see directly the cold cuts which are offered and could potentially pick them straight through the window. With the starter we picked two different white wines to compare – a “St. Aubin, Le Banque, 2008” (for CHF 38.00 plus CHF 32.00 corkage fee) and a “Chassagne Montrachet, 2010” (CHF 78.00 plus CHF 32.00 corkage fee). While the St. Aubin was nice but very light, the Chassagne Montrachet was of more intense taste – definitely more to my personal liking.

The main dish I had this evening was an “angus beef filet with vegetables and herb butter” (CHF 56.00). Frankly, the angus beef was one of the best I have had in the last couple of months – and that is not that easy as I eat a lot of beef filet and have quite high standards but they definitely managed to meet them. The texture is perfect, the aroma is meaty yet subtle and the nice grill taste tops it off perfectly.

Truly beautiful is also the display of the meat – nicely hung so it can age to get the perfect texture.

To round up a very outstanding dinner, I went for the “assorted cheese specialties with traditional bread” (CHF 20.00) which were …

… smiling at me since the moment I walked in – lovely cheese display.

With the main course and the dessert we had again two different wines to compare – only this time red wine. The first was a “Morey Saint-Denis, Domaine Dujac, 2007, Pinot Noir” (CHF 64.00 plus CHF 32.00 corkage fee) which was sophisticated yet not entirely matching my taste buds’ expectations as it was somehow too flat in taste. The other bottle to be tried was a “Krankl, Sine Qua Non, No. 6, 2001” (CHF 110.00 plus CHF 32.00 corkage fee) which was much more to my liking. The wine is strong, intense, full-bodied – perfectly to my liking.

To say a few words between all these beautiful pictures of the wines they have at display and can be tried or bought there about the service: the service is really dedicated and passionate about the job and does a great job with regards to attentiveness, friendliness and at the same time always making sure that the glasses are refilled – only in selected circumstances you have to wait a couple of minutes until your glass is refilled.

There are not many words to lose about the atmosphere – the place is absolutely lovely and beautifully desigend achieving the perfect balance between modern with glass and marble and traditional with warm wood.

While the prices are – looking at it from a total perspective – quite a challenge for many wallets I must say what you get for what you pay is more than fair – and even while at first it looks like the wines are expensive, again the same applies: for what you pay you absolutely get a great deal!

This does not only apply to the wines though but also to the other beverages like for example water (CHF 8.00 per bottle), double espresso (CHF 7.00) or 2cl of the “Tre Soli Tre” Grappa from the Berta Distillery (CHF 15.00).

All in all, the dining experience at the Restaurant Grandis is an outstanding one as you are placed in the middle of a warm, nice, comfortable and comforting environment with absolutely dedicated and close to flawless service while being served delicious dishes and this for steep but fair prices. If you are to be in Laax again – absolutely worth going here!
