1. June 2014: Restoran Tač

This place is truly a local gem – and frankly, you have no chance of finding it if you are not told so by a local. And luckily, I was told to visit this place by friend who happens to live in Zagreb. After I had a rather annoying afternoon with my not-so-favourite flight carrier, GermanWings, I decided to treat myself to some great local food.

My food orgy started with “Goose Liver Paté” (80 KRN, approx. CHF 12.85) which was not only aromatic but also flavourful and very rich. But not only that, the spread was very smooth and easy to apply. Frankly, the portion is quite big so you also need quite a piece of bread to use it all.

Second in line was a “Boskarin Carpaccio” (80 KRN, approx. CHF 12.85). Apparently, Boskarin is beef from a special region in Croatia which is – according to the waiter – of outstanding quality. To be entirely honest, the carpaccio was good, no question. Aromatic, the slices perfectly thin but overall it was not as mind-blowing as previously announced.

A dish which was specifically recommended by the waiter was the “Istrian Sheep Cheese with Truffles” (60 KRN, approx. CHF 9.65). When the plate was served, I was not really positively surprised but when I had tried the first piece of cheese, my perception about it definitely changed. The cheese was tasty and at the same time the taste of truffles was very subtle and rich.

As a main dish I went for the “Stuffed Tenderloin” (85 KRN, approx. CHF 13.65) and decided to have another main dish as a side dish, the “Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cheese” (40 KRN, approx. CHF 6.45). The stuffed tenderloin was nicely juicy, rich in flavour and fit very well with the aromatic gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese. In all fairness, the dish is not really a typical Croatian dish but flavourful and stuffs you perfectly.

As this day it was about trying one last time as much Croatian food as possible, the final course was a “Baklava with Walnuts” (20 KRN, approx. CHF 3.20). I expected something terribly and incredibly sweet but to be enitrely fair, it was absolutely delicious and not as sweet as originally expected.

Overall, the dishes are absolutely tasty, rich, and definitely more than fair in price. The same applies to the beverages (i.e. Double Espresso, 20 KRN, approx. CHF 3.20; Boskinac Cabarnet Sauvignon, 40 KRN, approx. CHF 6.45) and at the end of the whole dish there was even a “Kuta Grappa” offered on the house.

Now, what is truly lovely about this place besides the dishes, is the fact that this place is really a place for locals. There were absolutely no tourists but only locals which celebrated their Sunday. The atmosphere is absolutely simple but still very appealing as it is an atmospheric place.

The service is very friendly – in the beginning you need quite some patience until the waiter arrives and takes up your order but once this has happened, the service is swift, friendly, and supporting.

Overall, the Restaurant Tač is an absolute highlight – the place is truly dedicated to locals (luckily, they have an English menu), the food is local and very tasty, the prices are more than acceptable, and last but not least, the service is good. If you have the time, you should definitely pay the Restoran Tač a visit!
