18. June 2014: Restaurant Zum Grobe Ernst

| June 29, 2014 | 0 Comments

Frankly speaking, from the outside I would probably not have gone to the Zum Grobe Ernst but once you are in, the picture definitely changes. The place is nicely decorated and you can see that there are people running this restaurant who care about what they are doing. When you enter the table is already prepared and you can find salami, chorizo and pan de tomate on the table which all tastes good.

I went for the recommendation of a long-time customer of the restaurant and had the “beef filet from the US” (CHF 58.00) with “ERNESTO noodles” (CHF 10.00). As I enjoy beef filet on a very regular basis I am quite picky when it comes to the quality of meat but I must admit that the beef filet was incredibly tender and also had very nice aromas. The noodles were pretty good too – a tiny bit beyond al dente but absolutely delicious especially with the sauce they were served with. I am usually not a big fan of sauces for meat but has to be mentioned is the Café de Paris sauce which was served with the meat – it was absolutely incredibly tasty: definitely worth trying when you’re having beef filet at the Restaurant Zum Grobe Ernst.

For dessert, I had “four different cheeses” (CHF 22.00) which were good – meaning, the selection was a good one. What was a bit of a disappointment was the fact that I was not explained which cheeses I had been served which would have been lovely to know. However, absolutely something I can recommend.

Now, what was absolutely great was the wine I had this evening – the Hacienda 2009 (CHF 107.00 for 0,75L; CHF 224.00 for 1,5L) was incredibly rich. It did not only provide full bouquet but, furthermore, offered also the desired length. When it comes to the prices I must admit that the whole experience is not necessarily cheap but then again the prices are absolutely fair for what you get – be it food, be it beverages (e.g. double espresso, CHF 6.00, 0,33L beer CHF 5.50, 0,75l water CHF 8.00).

As initially mentioned, the service was great as the people in charge – which also seemed to be the owners – are passionate about their job. They are paying a lot of attention to their customers and are always there when you need anything in addition. Overall, although I was a bit sceptical at first when seeing the place from the outside, I must admit it is definitely a place where I will go again!
