13. December 2014: The Connaught Bar
The “Millionaire #1 (an early recipe can be found in the 1914 Jacob Straub’s ‘Drinks’, however the first rum variation appears two years later in Hugo Ensslin’s ‘Recipes for Mixed Drinks’. As Lawton Mackall put it in 1940 ‘Sweet, pleasant, even jovial. In fact, judging from actual millionaires we have met, rather atypical.’)” consisting of white rum, sloe gin, apricot brandy, and fresh lime juice (GBP 16.00) was a bit of a disappointment as the drink itself did not really blow me away but in its simplicity it was not bad.
My company tried the dessert and gave me a spoon to try – and frankly speaking, although I am not into sweets, this was absolutely delicious. Heavy, stuffy, creamy, but very tasty.
The bar itself is incredibly lovely. If you get a window seat, and we were lucky enough to get one, you have the chance to people watch which is especially nice during Christmas season.
The waiters do a great job – friendly, attentive, and quick. Overall, The Connaught Bar is definitely a place I can recommend – not so much for the drinks but for the atmosphere, the service and the dessert.
