13. December 2014: Restaurant The Five Fields

| February 4, 2015 | 0 Comments

Once the decision had been taken what to order there are two small surprises from the kitchen to kick off the dinner. A “Dorset crab tartlet with golden baby beetroot and lemon puree” and a “foie gras mousse with prune puree and orange powder on a gingerbread crostini” which looked tiny (and was tiny) but was a great way to wake up your taste buds to make them ready for dinner.

But not enough with that, another amuse bouche was served, an “onion consommé with beer-pickled onion petal and Gruyere curd”. It was somehow simple but very interesting – and it strongly reminded me of a French onion soup au gratin with cheese.

You have the chance to go for the tasting menu or a smaller “Prix Fixe Menu” version (GBP 50.00) where you are free to choose which courses from the menu you want (no limitations). I started with “foie gras (Shimeji mushrooms & beetroot)” and when I got it served I was wondering for a moment where the foie gras was. The red ball in the middle actually was the foie gras covered with a nice sweet layer of jelly. The combination with the different beets was exquisite.

As I am not a big fan of desserts, I decided to have a second starter and went for the “Orkney scallop (cauliflower & pistachio)” which was quite okay. The scallops were a bit too dry but the cauliflower was surprisingly dulcet. However, there were too many pistachio applied to the dish making it too much of a nut dish.

Sometimes you find the funniest things where you do not expect them. I have never tried grouse before so I decided to go for “red grouse (pumpkin, cranberry & trompettes)” which was pleasantly delicious. However, the meat has a storng own taste which is definitely not to everybody’s liking.

To round up the menu, the restaurant presents you with something warm for on the way – a special “mulled wine” with various spices sweetens up your walk out into the cold …

… supported by some friandises.

The place already welcomes you with a great and private atmosphere – the light is dimmed, the place has a certain degree of romanticism, and the table setting is something one needs to get used to (three rows of tables, the outer tables are placed in a way so both persons at the table get to view the middle row). Still, the place is very atmospheric.

The waiters know what they are doing providing close to perfect service, being incredibly friendly. The Five Fields also supports the “Street Smart” initative (GBP 1.00) which I consider a good thing. And in addition to all this, the prices are really fair for the food, but also for the beverages (i.e. double espresso, GBP 3.50; sparkling water, GBP 4.50; 1 glass of Bargylus, GBP 12.50).

Overall, I can absolutely recommend you the Restaurant The Five Fields as the place is atmospheric, romantic, and warm. The service is good, the food is exquisite, and the prices are fair. Reservation is a must.
