2. March 2015: Restaurant Plachutta’s Gasthaus zur Oper

| April 29, 2015 | 1 Comments

I vividly remember the first time I have been to Plachutta’s Gasthaus zur Oper in 2012 and there I was quite disappointed. This time the experience was – luckily – a bit different. The evening started with fresh bread, spread and butter (EUR 2.00 per person). While I appreciated the bread and spread to make the waiting time go by quicker I must admit that I still don’t get why restaurants take a cover charge for something like bread.

As a starter I had “goose liver créme brûlée with cranberries and home-made brioche” (EUR 13.90). While the whole dish looked absolutely appealing I must say I was a bit disappointed as the goose liver did not taste the way I had expected it to, respectively, I have tried better goose liver before.

The “Schnitzel from Vienna from the best parts of the veal” (EUR 19.20) was absolutely delicious though. The meat is tender and the bread crumb crust is light. Perfect Viennese Schnitzel!

The “potato and lamb’s lettuce salad” is always served with the schnitzel but frankly speaking this is really not something which I’d say is necessary. However, it is a fine match and especially the potato salad is actually tasty.

The place is traditional from its interior design and generally appealing but it is also a place where you can find a lot of tourists as it is – apparently – the best schnitzel in town (although there are various restaurants competing for this title). The service is dedicated, classical, and of high quality. The prices for the dishes are okay and so are they for the beverages (e.g. 0,75L, Vöslauer sparkling, EUR 6.40; respectively, a bottle of red wine, Kerschbau, EUR 28.00). Overall, the Restaurant Plachutta’s Gasthaus zur Oper is worth to pay a visit. Booking – if you go before 10pm for dinner – highly recommended.
