25. June 2015: Restaurant Skykitchen flavored by a.choice

I had booked this restaurant approximately 3 months ago and while I can’t quite recall how I found it I must admit, it was a good decision to book it! The “corn soup with Asian ratatouille and king crab” was a very decent start – nicely warm to tickle your taste buds. The “Chardonnay Halbf Fri, 0,375L” (EUR 15.00) was a very pleasant wine pairing – smooth, aromatic, definitely not like any of the regular Chardonnays!

A second course from the kitchen started off the evening – “lobscouse with roasted potatoes, sallow thorn and anchovies” which was quite unusual as lobscouse is really a dish typically to be found in Hamburg but it was a very own Berlin interpretation and it was actually quite good!

So I went for the “6 course degustation menu” (EUR 86.00) which started with “True Wilderness: veal and yellow fin, turnips greens, black sesame, capers”. As tiny as the dish looked as aromatic and tasty it was.

Next in line was a “Saint Pierre and Pancetta (fava bean, radicchio, saffron)” which was not only looking very lovely but the softness of the saint pierre in combination with the slight saltiness of the pancetta made it a lovely dish. The saffron foam in which the whole dish was prepared definitely added its tweak to the dish.

Something I have not tried many times in my live before was pigeon – and the “Étouffé Pigeon: Boudin Noir, white onion, beetroot” was actually surprisingly good. The meat itself was not that outstanding as the consistency is something between veal and beef but in combation with the onions and the beetroot made it absolutely yummy.

When I had asked while ordering what a “Particella 34” was, I was informed that it is not anything I would have to understand. But basically the “Particella 34: pine nuts, vanilla, tomato” is an olive oil sorbet with olive oil which comes from the 34th parcel. The dish was simple but very lovely in taste.

The main course was a “Greater Omaha Beef and Foie Gras: perigord truffle, mushrooms, celeriac”. While the meat was tasty I must say, once more, that foie gras and truffles are often overrated. In this case, you barely could get a glimpse of the taste of the foie gras which was mainly due to the fact that the layer of foie gras applied to the beef was incredibly thin!

A little pre-dessert offered by the kitchen was “carrot. kefir. szechuan”. A decent and simple dish to relax your stomach before the official dessert.

As I am not such a big fan of sweets, I went for the “cheese-like dessert”, the “St. Marcellin & Belper Knolle: red pepper, cumin, “Gölles” apple syrup”. Well, I do like blue cheese, I do like strong flavours, I do like intense flavours but this was too much! The dessert had a super intense blue cheese taste which really was quite stingy and quite edgy in your mouth. Given I like my taste buds to be challenged I was not completely taken aback but my colleague who had the same dish immediately stopped eating it after one bite. And I must admit, it has an incredibly intense taste which is very close to being unpleasant. It was a bit of a pity as the menu was great – only the final course somehow was too intense.

When you are seated in the beginning though you are rapidly served some bread with two different kinds of spread. And it is not just bread you’re served but much more a nice little selection of various breads.

Obviously, when you are done with everything, some friandises are served and I must admit they were lovely and kind of compensated for the intensity of the cheese-like dessert. With regards to the service one can only say that the service is very dedicated and passionate – and all in all does a great job. Only when it came to paying the bill, and splitting respectively, the two waiters were not able to deal with the issue and the head waitress needed to come to solve the issue. At least they handled it professionally by offering us a rum on the house!

Overall, the restaurant is not only offering great food for fair prices but you also have a lovely view over Berlin as the restaurant is located on the 12th floor. The prices are fair for the menu as well as for the beverages (i.e. Römerquelle sparkling water, 0,75L, EUR 8.00; Cu Rioja Crianza PRE, 0,75L, EUR 37.00; Nonino Chardonnay Grappa, EUR 10.00; double espresso, EUR 3.80).

Overall I can absolutely recommend you to dine at the Restaurant Skykitchen flavoured by a.choice. Just make sure to book a table in advance as else you won’t stand a chance to get a place to sit that same evening!
