28. November 2015: Restaurant Gocklwirt

I decided to go for the tasting menu (EUR 54.00) as the courses looked quite tempting. The whole thing started with a greeting from the kitchen called “home-made salmon tartar with marinated beet root with puree”. The combination of flavours was actually lovely while the salmon tartar itself was rather average.

The next course was a “chestnut truffle cappuccino” which was good and warm but the truffles you could barely taste and they were really an unnecessary addition to the soup.

The “quail breast with scallops on beet root with honey onions and mustard foam” was quite okay. The quail breast as well as the scallops were a bit too dry for my taste but still enjoyable.

The “tender lamb saddle in a herb crust with an artichoke ratatouille and green asparagus served with a port reduction” was quite delicious. The lamb was actually tender and aromatic and cooked to perfection. The ratatouille was a bit monotonous in its taste but overall quite fine.

The “potatoes au gratin” were a bit of a disappointment as they did not really taste like too much and were definitely too dry.

The “sweets – variation of various sweets” was really quite a variation. You were supposed to enjoy that yourself as part of the menu. And frankly, I can eat quite a bit but all this alone – no chance! Definitely no chance! However, the sweets were absolutely yummy (at least the ones I’ve tried).

Overall, the dishes were absolutely okay – nothing extraordinary, but good. The service was dedicated, attentive and overall quite friendly. The price for the menu is absolutely okay and so are the prices for the beverages (i.e. double espresso, EUR 4.00; 1L mineral water, EUR 4.50, 0,75L white, EUR 42.00; 0,75L red, EUR 32.00). The atmosphere is the one of a farmer’s house somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Lovely, but very traditional. If you are in the area, the Gocklwirt is definitely a place you can pay a visit.
