Not so satisfying main course: Restaurant La Cucina (27. February 2016)

| April 29, 2016 | 0 Comments

The “3-course menu from the Grisons” (CHF 55.00) sounded very promising and it started quite okay. The “starters’ plate from the Grisons” (usually CHF 21.00) consisted of “a mangold tart”, “breaded cheese”, “some salad”, “panna cotta” and “dried beef Grisons style with cheese and apple cubes”. I did like the dried beef Grisons style with the cheese and apple cubes and the panna cotta. The other elements were rather dull though. Plus, the mangold tart was cold (which it definitely should not have been as my company also had mangold tart and it was served warm).

The second course was a “pumpkin cream soup with sour cream from Vals” (usually, CHF 11.00). The soup was too watery for my taste and lacked seasoning. After putting some salt and pepper, it was actually quite decent. However, it was still way too watery.

The “mountain lamb from Surcasti, served two ways with wild juniper from Frunt with gin and rosemary, Bramata polenta and seasonal vegetables” (usually, CHF 37.00) was not really to my liking. The breaded lamb was overcooked and the polenta was too coarse for me. And last but not least, it looked like “airplane food” (in economy) – just not appealing. I did not try the seasonal vegetables though.

They have a bread buffet where you can help yourself with home-made bread, garlic butter, pesto, and olives. And I must admit the bread was lovely and so was the garlic butter. The atmosphere of the place is fine, simple but okay and a bit dark (a hint more light wouldn’t be that bad). The service is very friendly but you have to be patient as apparently not only the kitchen but also the waitresses are super busy when the restaurant is full.

Personally, I cannot recommend the La Cucina in Vals. What I must say though, the pizzas they had served to the table next to us looked quite good.
