A surprisingly Spanish experience: Restaurant 1700 (1. April 2016)

I passed by the 1700 on my way from the office to the hotel and it looked absolutely promising from outside so I decided to book a table for dinner. Upon arrival I was not so sure about the atmosphere anymore. Honestly, from the outside, it looked lovely but when you enter it, it really lacks atmosphere. The fact that the waiter needed like 5 minutes to realize I was there and seat me did not help either.

Luckily, things changed a bit during the course of the evening. We decided to have several tapas starting with “tuna, hummus and onion broth” (EUR 6.50) but it seemed like the hummus and onion broth were – in fact – peanuts, or at least contained peanuts from the taste. So the first course was not really the best start.

The “Jamón Ibérico, Pan Tumaca, 40gr” (EUR 9.50) on the other hand was already way more promising, respectively was quite aromatic and it definitely helped that the waiter somehow was changed and a young guy became responsible for the table.

The “patatas bravas, aioli, salsa brava” (EUR 5.00) were – well – average. I mean, there is nothing special about patatas bravas anyway, to be fair, but still it was just average.

The “dates and plums wrapped in bacon on a skewer” (EUR 6.50) were definitely the best course. The “pan con tomate” we did not order but it was served nevertheless – and it was good. All in all, the dishes were not that outstanding – which is a pity. Because the “new” waiters which were assigned to our table after the initial mess actually did a great job. They were dedicated, passionate, and caring. And also quite jovial (when talking in Spanish).

Actually, my favourite part were the “aioli, olives, and bread”.

The ice creams “Vanilla” (EUR 3.50) and “Cookies & Cream” (EUR 3.50) by Ben & Jerry were nice but it is not really the way I would expect a restaurant to serve ice cream. However, at least they were good in taste.

Frankly speaking, I would not suggest you to dine at the restaurant 1700 – it over promises totally in terms of atmosphere and – related – expected quality of the dishes. However, the waiters were helpful and friendly making up for the quality of the kitchen. The prices are anyway quite fair which is also true for the beverages (although at the pricier end): 0,75L Water, EUR 7.00; Wine, EUR 59.00.
