True Hamburg like food: Restaurant Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher (17. June 2016)

| August 9, 2016 | 0 Comments

As it was pouring cats and dogs we decided to take a short break and have lunch – and the Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher looked just about the right place. You have the possibility to sit with a view onto one of the many channels Hamburg has to offer. The interior is quite nice – very traditional but definitely appealing. As the name – in German – already suggests, you should definitely try eel. So I went for “smoked eel with brown bread” (EUR 13.50) as a starter and frankly speaking it was nothing special.

As a second starter, I wanted to try the “Matjes filet on buttered grey bread” (EUR 8.50) which was slightly better but did not match with the matjes I had like five years ago in Rotterdam.

Given it was Hamburg and “Labskaus” is something you probably only get in Hamburg which is kind of a combination of meat with mashed potatoes and beet root juice I ordered the “Original Labskaus prepared sailor style with various side dishes” (EUR 15.50) and while I had actually expected least of this dish it was the best of all of this lunch.

With regards to the service, the waitress (who also seemed to be the owner) was as friendly as you would expect it from a person being from Hamburg. Necessary minimum. However, everything was executed in an efficient manner.

The drinks are actually quite okay too in price (i.e. 0,7L Taunusquelle mineral water, EUR 6.90; Alsterwasser 0,4L EUR 3.80). In case you want to experience the real thing I can recommend you to visit the Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher.
