A hidden gem serving great menus: Restaurant MUN (30. September 2016)

| October 31, 2016 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Mun is not really located in an area you would just randomly walk by – which is a pity as the restaurant is actually great and the dishes are luscious. They offer basically two different types of menu combination, a 4-course menu and a 6-course menu, and as a “seafood version” and as a “meat version”. I decided to go for the “4 course fish menu” (EUR 58.00) and the menu starts with an amuse bouche – a “fried rice roll with spicy tuna” which is not only fried and crunchy but also rather spicy but definitely a good way to get your palate started.

The first course of the menu was served shortly after – and was a “selection of sushi” starting with tuna, salmon, prawn, eel, and a fried crayfish head. While I definitely liked the sushi, especially the tuna one, I was a bit surprised by their specialty, the fried crayfish head. I mean, it was definitely interesting but a bit too crunchy for my personal gusto.

The “tuna tartar” came with a bunch of other ingredients like avocado, nuts, sprouts which took quite a bit of the original flavour of the tuna tartar away . However, the combination of elements mixed with the tuna actually was rich and mouth-watering.

The “scallop miso risotto” sounded very promising and it was definitely good but ever since I have had that one scallop at the O Paparico in Porto, I haven’t encountered anything which can beat it. However, it was actually absolutely fine, so not outstanding but good.

Given I am not that much into sweets but more into savoury dishes, I asked them to replace the sweet for the second starter choice, the “new style hamachi sashimi”. I personally can’t recall that I have ever tried hamachi but I actually fancied it quite a bit. The combination of the rather salty fish with the pomegranate was definitely an interesting one.

The menu was overall a very well-balanced combination of flavours. The waitress was very attentive and friendly and did a great job. There was only a minor flaw when she forgot to bring the second bottle of water upon asking but remembered quickly and apologized a great deal. What I considered a nice gesture was the passing by of the owner of the place for a short chit-chat.

The interior is very well-made, appealing, modern, interesting design. I definitely liked it quite a lot and felt comfortable right away. What has some room for improvement is the overall coordination – when we were the first ones in the restaurants, the service was flawless, very attentive, and quick. However, when the first other tables got occupied, the service slowed down quite tremendously. And it was not the case that the restaurant was full by any means. I mean, I cannot judge if the kitchen is not able to keep up with the guests or if the service isn’t but it was noticeable in any case.

Overall, I can absolutely recommend the Restaurant Mun though as they offer great dishes for a very fair price in a lovely atmosphere with good service.
