When you end up eating dips for starters: Restaurant Vodenica Mulino (29. December 2016)
If you are not so knowledgable about the Macedonian language and the description of the dishes is rather limited you might end up ordering dips for starters. I did so. The dips were definitely tasty but obviously, it lacked something to dip it with – like bread. But you can actually eat them by themselves as they are quite thick. The sauces were “Makalo (dried peppers, leek, onion, potato)” (140 MKD), “Pindzur (tomato, pepper, onion, parsley, eggplant)” (140 MKD) and “Ajvar (peppers, eggplants)” (140 MKD).
What was incredibly tasty though was the “Macedonian dish (pork fillet, meatballs, chicken breast, onion, bacon, mushrooms)” (650 MKD). I definitely had no clue what to expect from a ‘Macedonian dish’ but had more expected a plate of different meats than a stew pot of everything together. But it was absolutely mouth-watering. The sauce was thick and rich and the meat was actually tasty.
The Mulino is lovely in terms of atmosphere – it is nicely furnished, like a little restaurant in the alps, spacious, and nicely decorated. However, it is a bit dark as all the lights are dimmed.
Surprisingly for me, the Macedonian wines were overall quite good – the “Alexandar, Bovin” (1’200 MKD) was relatively smooth and aromatic but didn’t have length. The service is friendly and relatively attentive – it wasn’t consistent though. For some time they were rather attentive – later their attention kind of deteriorated but overall it is definitely a place I can recommend you to visit when in Macedonia.
