You think it’s a tourist trap but it’s actually a decent lunch spot: Restaurant Zeughauskeller (3. March 2017)
It is quite long ago since I’ve been to the Zeughauskeller – as I have somehow memorized it as a “tourist trap”. However, turns out, it is actually quite well visited by locals for lunch. I went for the “tomato soup” (CHF 8.50) as a starter which is a decent start for lunch – however, the soup itself is rather standard and CHF 8.50 for a bit of soup with whipped cream seems a bit over the top.
The main course, on the other hand, was definitely worth trying. The “fish crisps served with buttered potatoes, leaf spinach and sauce tartare” (CHF 21.50) was a simple main (which looked quite tiny at first) but was fine. The crisps were aromatic, the potatoes fine and the sauce tartare fit perfectly. However, the leaf spinach was somewhat dull.
The place itself is huge, loud, and very traditionally decorated with a howitzer – something you don’t see every day. But it has its charm. The service is friendly but after taking up the initial order not really that attentive. In order to re-stock the sauce tartare, I had to wave and wait quite a bit. The prices are super decent – especially considering that the place is located right next to Paradeplatz which is also true for beverages (i.e. 0,5l Valser, CHF 5.80; double espresso, CHF 5.50). For lunch, it’s key to book in advance though as else you won’t stand a chance to get a table.
