Always a safe bet for a decent meal in Zofingen: Restaurant Hotel Zofingen (28. & 29. April 2017)

The restaurant in the Hotel Zofingen looks the same since I can recall it the first time I walked in 14 years ago. We decided to go for the “three course menu” (CHF 48.00) where you basically get to pick a starter, a main and a dessert. As a starter I went for the “black salsify mousse, Serrano ham, and purslane” – simple but perfect to start as it was a light and pleasant dish.

The main course was definitely a positive surprise as the whole dish was way better than I had expected – the “sautéed Swiss Prime Entrecôte beef cubes served with a balsamico jus and asparagus risotto” were an amazing combination. The risotto was perfectly cooked, creamy, rich – the beef cubes were deliciously tender!

The “cheese trilogy” on the other hand was a bit of a disappointment – I mean, you got cheese, sure, and three different ones but you didn’t get an explanation of what kind of cheese you are having.

The service is generally attentive and friendly – however, when it gets to ordering a beer (0,3l, CHF 4.60) or the like you might have to be a bit patient. The next day, we went for lunch and I had the “Agnolotti stuffed with tomatoes and mozzarella, served on a bell pepper ragout” (CHF 22.00). While it looks like the agnolotti are sweating, they are actually quite yummy – and the bell pepper ragout as a ‘ground’ for the dish fit perfectly.

The main course on the other hand, a “real Viennese schnitzel, served with French fries and three types of vegetables” (CHF 42.00) was definitely not a real Viennese schnitzel (okay, no real surprise there!). The meat was too thick, and the pieces were too small. The meat was fine though and the vegetables were good too. Decent – but compared to a CHF 48.00 set menu, CHF 42.00 for the main is definitely quite heavy in price.

Overall though, the Hotel Zofingen is a safe bet when you are in Zofingen – you get decent food for generally fair prices (also true for beverages, i.e. “double espresso” for CHF 5.00). The service is attentive and friendly but you might have to be patient from time to time.
