A place you wouldn’t just walk in – but you definitely should: Restaurant Zum Goldenen Fass (23. May 2017)

When I walked around to find the Restaurant Zum Goldenen Fass I was wondering a bit where the hell I was at it isn’t really an inviting neighborhood and once I’ve found the entrance, I was still not sure why to come here. The place is simple and – at least to me – not that inviting at first sight. However, if you walk around the corner and enter the patio, the atmosphere definitely changes. It is a rather small area but you really feel comfortable there – a bit secluded and isolated but at least in peace.

Once you’re seated and have ordered your drinks (which are served rapidly), a small amuse bouche of “cucumbers, tomatoes, dill, chive, and vinegar” is served. Sounds simple at first – and well it is – but it is quite refreshing and surprising.

I decided to try the “menu” (CHF 64.50) which allows you to pick from a few starters, a few mains, and desserts. I went for the “white bean salad with chorizo, cherry tomatoes, rocket salad, croutons, lemon juice and fresh herbs”. The salad tasted as rich as it looked – refreshing somehow but intense and flavourful (with the saltiness of the chorizo) on the other hand.

As a main course, the “glazed veal ribs with a baked potato” were served. I am usually not really into dishes which you have to enjoy with your hands but they looked so juicy, so delicious, it was easy to dig in and get your hands ‘dirty’. Compared to most pork ribs I’ve tried so far, there is way more meat and it is also much more tender than pork. So definitely a big like! The baked potato with sour cream was rather average.

The “little raw vegetable herb salad” which came with it was not only lovely to look at and to create a feeling of a balanced meal but it was also absolutely tasty. They are really good at this tiny salad things!

Overall, the dishes are very good and the price is very fair for Zurich. The waitress was very attentive, jovial, and friendly. Beyond that, when the meal of one at our table wasn’t to their liking, she offered proactively to do a new course without even a hint of being annoyed about it. Something you see quite seldom these days. The prices for the beverages are Zurich standard: 0,5l Goba Mineral Water, CHF 6.00; 1l water, CHF 10.00, a glass of white wine “Muga”, CHF 6.50 (which is rather cheap) and a bottle of “Lagrein Turmhof, 2014” for CHF 64.00.

All in all, I can absolutely recommend you to pay the restaurant “Zum Goldenen Fass” a visit. The place is lovely (especially the backyard), the service is incredibly caring, the food is good, and the prices are fair!
