17. September 2010: Restaurant Turbinenhalle

| September 18, 2010 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Turbinenhalle is located in Kreis 9, Altstetten in Zürich, and therefore not that easily reachable by public transportation from the main station. Although you can take tram 2 to get there, it takes you at least 20 minutes from the city center.

The Turbinenhalle is part of the brewery “Turbinen Bräu” and therefore, the eating room is looking like a former industrial plant changed to a restaraunt. The height of the room and the spacious arrangement of the tables create a nice atmosphere though.

The waiters are friendly and helpful, sometimes a bit slow though. When we wanted to pay, we’ve waited more than 10 minutes until the waitress realized that we were actually ready to pay the bill she has brought to us before.

The Turbinenhalle offers 3 daily lunch set menus besides the regular menu. I went for the meat menu (fixed price of CHF 19.00 for the starter and the main course).

As a starter I had the – in the menu included – Zürcher Hausfrauensuppe which was kind of non-identifiable but tasted okay. In German, there is the saying “Das Auge isst mit” (didn’t really find an appropriate translation for that) and here, the eye definitely isn’t really interested in eating – the arrangement of the soup is not attractive at all (at least to my eye).

As a main course I had a hamburger with salad, although the meatloaf was in puff pastry and therefore – in my opinion – doesn’t quite deserve the name of a “hamburger”. Still, the main course wasn’t bad.

Finally, as a desert, I had Vermicelle (a paste made of chestnuts) whichw as quite tasty (but I don’t think that you can do anything wrong with Vermicelle).

All together with the desert, water and a double espresso, it cost CHF 35.00 which is decent in price. Although it’s not really the best dishes, and the way things are arranged on the plate can definitely be improved, it’s a good place to go for a quick business lunch.
