An interesting selection of various tartars: Restaurant Brasserie Freilager (29. June 2017)
I love the little ‘welcome from the kitchen’ – the freshly cut ‘dried meat from the Grisons’ – and it is perfect as you have something to nibble right away and won’t have to fill yourself up with bread and spread.
Again, they managed to update the menu which I consider really exceptional given their menu is actually not that large. The “Thai mango gazpacho served with a mango habanero salad” (CHF 15.00) was quite a surprise in terms of taste combinations. The soup was cold and sweet – no surprise there. But the spiciness of the habanero really added this little extra to the dish – loved it!
The “lamb tartare served with capers, bee balm, mint, yogurt, and tomato jam” (CHF 39.00) was – let’s say, surprising! I never even had the idea to eat lamb tartare. Beef, sure. Veal, I’ve tried. Tuna, obviously. Salmon, of course! But lamb? Well, it was time to try it and I must say it was way better than I had expected. It didn’t taste much like lamb (you know when you eat a piece of lamb and you feel like you’re liking the animal and get all its distinct taste in your mouth. I mean, never done that, don’t know how that would be (but I don’t really want to imagine) but it is kind of how I imagie it to be). In any case, definitely worth trying!
Today was again a day when Julia was working and the service was close to flawless – friendly, attentive, jovial, but still professional. All in all, I do like the Restaurant Brasserie Freilager a lot – I mean, they really re-invent their menu over and over again and almost everything I’ve tried there was something I liked. Not sure in which place that has last happened!
