A truly unique Italian experience where you wouldn’t expect it: Restaurant Grottino 1313 (16. August 2017)

Probably for more than three years I was trying to pay the Restaurant Grottino 1313 a visit but never actually made it. Finally, it was time to do so. When the weather is nice, you’re seated in a small but lovely decorated garden and shortly after you’ve taken your seat, you are served “salame and bread”. The salame are delicious and the bread is quite fine too.

The concept of the Grottino 1313 is a bit different to other restaurants as you are not to pick a dish or the like but there is a menu and the only thing you can chose is how many courses you want. Secondly, things are not served by the plate but rather by the bowl or pot. So it is more like you’re getting home to your parents and a bowl with things is put on the table – and then help yourself. I love the concept. The “insalata mista & zuppa fredda di patate e porro” were both great. Sound, tasty down-to-earth dishes!

The main course was “pasta con salsa picante, ricotta, olive, parmino e cipolle al balsamico”. While this looks super simple … it actually is. However, the consistency of the pasta is great and the portions are way too generous for my personal gusto – at least if you are four people by the table and only three are actually eating.

The “scamone di manzo con patate arrostite e bictola alla parma” was my personal highlight. The meat was incredibly tender and mouth-watering but unfortunately due to the amount I’ve had consumed before, it was a bit too much as yet another course.

The place is – as mentioned – lovely. Not only outside in the garden but also inside …

… where even the hallway to the toilet is sparkling …

Overall, the Grottino 1313 is absolutely outstanding in terms of atmosphere and the service is generally also doing a good job. Although our main waitress had her first day, she was helpful and friendly at all times – something you would not always have. However, sometimes things were forgotten – when I had asked for more water, it took me two more tries to finally get my water.

The prices are also absolutely decent – a “three course menu without dessert” accounts for CHF 60.00, a glass of Roero Arneis (1dl) for CHF 8.00 and finally a glass of the ‘daily red wine’ CHF 9.00. The “double espresso” with CHF 6.00 is comparatively expensive. Overall, the Restaurant Grottino 1313 is definitely a place you should visit when in Lucerne.
