Lovely traditional Argentinian stew – a must visit: Restaurant Doña Salta (18. October 2017)
The Doña Salta was recommended to us by quite a few people throughout our stay in Salta. Given the number of independent recommendations plus my personal experience – absolutely go here when you’re in Salta. I went for another round of empanadas as a starter. This time “Empanada de Carne (carne cortada a cuchillo)” (17 ARS) and “Empanada de Charqui de los Valles Calchaques (salted dried meat)” (17 ARS). The charqui empanada was quite tasty and something I haven’t tried before.
Given we had parrilla for like 4 days in a row, I was so looking forward to not eating pure meat for once. Therefore, I decided to try something local and traditional called “Huaschalocro (traditional food. pumpkin, beans, ground corn, chopped veal meat, bacon)” (140 ARS). It is basically some kind of stew with a lot of corn, some meat and bacon. And while it is quite a portion I must admit it was absolutely great! True and real comfort food!
Given I can’t recall when I last had “Ensalada Berro (water cress salad)” (60 ARS) it was also time to try. It is served without anything so you have to mix it with vinegar and oil yourself. I tried the salad though before applying any of the before-mentioned. And believe me – not tasty! However, with some oil, vinegar, and salt, it turned out to be a great side dish to the Huaschalocro.
The place itself is simple but appealing, the service is very friendly and dedicated but tends to forget things so you have to remind him a couple of times until the “agua con gas” (45 ARS) or the “limonada por litro” (70 ARS) are finally brought to your table. Still, despite the not perfect service, the Doña Salta is absolutely a must-visit when in Salta!
