A true Jordanian dish to be tried – Mansaf: Restaurant Sufra (28. December 2017)

The Sufra has been recommended to me as one of the restaurants which serve local food in a nice atmosphere – and that you should book a table in advance. Turns out he was right as the place was very crowded. Luckily though, we were able to get a table and indulge in some of these local dishes like “dimseh (lentils with aubergine, garlic, tahina & pomegranate molasses dressing)” (4.650 JOD) which was the best lentil-based dish I have eaten in my life! You must try it when you go here!

The “hummus billahmeh (mashed chickpeas with minced meat)” (5.750 JOD) on the other hand was rather standard and I have definitely tried better hummus in my life before this.

I’m having a bit mixed feelings about the “sujuk (traditional homemade sausage)” (5.750 JOD). The sausage was aromatic and flavour intense but the sauce was somehow a bit weird.

As a main dish I went for the typical Jordanian dish “Mansaf (rice-based dish served with traditional jameed sauce and lamb chunk, decorated with assorted almonds and pine seeds)” (13.750 JOD) which was good in taste but frankly also a bit on the expensive side, especially considering the amount of meat you get. The slightly sour yogurt which you mix with the dish is providing the necessary juiciness to the dish.

The “Arabic bread” is something I truly grew fond of in the past few months – and it always goes well with pretty much everything.

The spicy olives which are served in a pickle jar are the amuse bouche from the kitchen. Rather average.

The place itself is truly pretty though – the interior is nicely decorated, spacious, full of light and last but not least the seats are comfortable.

The service is generally very attentive and friendly but you have to be patient when you are waiting for your beverages or when you are ordering the bill – both takes up a substantial amount of time. All in all though, I can recommend the Restaurant Sufra as it offers great food in a nice atmosphere and friendly service for a decent price.
