Amazing atmosphere and exquisite service: Restaurant NapaGrill – Californian Fine Dining (19. June 2018)

The NapaGrill has been on my to do list for quite some time but it took me quite a while until I finally managed to pay it a visit. You are welcomed in a very lovely way and the waiters and waitresses make sure that you feel comfortable throughout the whole stay. The “bread selection” is quite okay but apparently a bit selective as neighboring tables got a different bread selection.

As an amuse bouche, we were served “arrancini on tomato purrée” which was perfect to start the taste buds going wild in your palate.

The “avocado salad (with rocket salad, dried tomatoes and coriander)” (CHF 16.00) was a rather tiny portion but the combination of the avocado with the dried tomatoes really made it an exceptional, yet simple, dish.

The “US California premium beef, filet mignon, lady’s Cut (170gr)” (CHF 51.50) with “Sauce Béarnaise” was good but not entirely perfect as I would have wished it to be. While there was definitely a grill flavor to the meat, it was a bit too much. Secondly, the medium-rare I had ordered wasn’t really medium rare. However, the meat was generally good so if they would prepare it less smokey, the dish would actually be perfect.

The “Pommes Alumettes” (CHF 7.00) on the other hand were definitely too dry and – for the Pommes Alumettes and the meat – there was not really enough sauce béarnaise.

To finish off dinner, I went for two scoops of icecream (CHF 5.50 each) – “sour cream” and “cherry”. And they were both tasty. So, with regards to the dishes, there is not really anything to complain about, and if the grill chef would actually manage to not overly smoke the steaks, it would all be delicious.

What was truly impressive was the switch of waiters throughout the evening without us noticing a deterioration in quality. I mean, usually, you would realize that there was no proper handover between the waiters. But this time, that was not the case. The new waitress even knew which kind of wine we were served by the previous waiter. Something truly remarkable. What one realized though, throughout the evening was the fact that when it became more crowded, the service quality slightly decreased. Still very good, but not as good as before.
