Surprisingly good Lebanese food: Restaurant Tabouleh (9. October 2018)
Since my five months in Bahrain, I am always a bit skeptical of Middle Eastern food in Europe – but the Tabouleh was a very positive surprise in a place I definitely did not expect it. The Tabouleh is one of seven restaurants located in the basement floor of a shopping mall. Not the place I would immediately associate with good food. However, I was positively surprised. Admittedly, the queueing process is rather annoying as you have to stand in line, place your order, pick one of the general tables (not belonging to any specific restaurant) and then your food is served.
I went for the “hummus (mashed chick peas prepared with sesame oil, lemon juice, garlic, pita bread)” (EUR 4.90) which was surprisingly good and rich in flavour. And – surprisingly enough – there was even enough pita bread to finish up the hummus.
As a main course, I took the dish which took longest to prepare: “Schisch Tawouk (marinaded, crispy grilled chicken pieces on a skewer with salad, pickles, tomatoes wrapped in pita bread)” (EUR 5.40). It was worth the wait though. The schisch tawouk was decent in terms of flavour and amount.
The service is generally friendly and helpful – however, when it comes to atmosphere, then this is definitely not the place to be. However, all in all, you get for almost no money (comparatively, the sparkling water, 0,2l with EUR 2.10 is expensive) a decent lunch. So if you want quick and tasty and don’t care too much about the atmosphere, then that’s the perfect spot.
