Decent but way too loud: Restaurant Meerbar (10. October 2018)

The restaurant Meerbar has been on my recommendation list for a solid three years. Considering that, I think it’s quite surprising that the place still exists. And it was absolutely full on a Wednesday night! We had booked a table in advance but I’m not sure they had actually reserved a table. However, we got one allocated and it was okay. In all fairness though, the problem with that are the tables. They are wide which is nice in terms of having enough space to enjoy it. But in terms of talking to each other it makes things a bit annoying given then suddenly everyone is far from each other needing you to scream across the table.

The bread which was brought was great and together with the olive oil and the salt, it really made for a good snack before the actual dishes. However, way too much time passed until we could finally place our orders.

I went for the “ceviche” (EUR 17.00) as a starter which was fine. Far from lovely or outstanding in terms of flavour and experience but solid.

The “filetsteak (200gr)” (EUR 33.00) was good in terms of meat quality and it had a nice crust but somehow for me it was lacking those lovely grill flavours. It was grilled, it was perfectly medium-rare but something was missing. Not sure if it was just a pinch of salt or what it was, but something. The “Sauce Hollandaise” (every additional one costs EUR 1.00) was good and so were the fries and the salad. So, all in all, the main course was fine.

The view (not directly from the table) in the Medienhafen is actually quite lovely. And after the initial slow order placement, the waiter somehow got better and more attentive and it made the evening better.

The prices for the beverages are okay with EUR 8.90 for 0,2l Pinot Grigio, EUR 5.50 for 0,5l San Pellegrino and EUR 3.80 for a double espresso. The “Barbera Luisin, 2015” (EUR 42.00) was a rock solid wine for the main but nothing extraordinary either (I guess you can’t expect that from a EUR 40 wine). To sum it up, the Meerbar is a place where you get decent food for okay prices, which is atmospheric but frankly speaking it isn’t that special.
